Personally, I find it rather refreshing that we( Americans) are not the only ones disturbed by our presidental flaws . At least the French flaws are kind of amusing...at least to me..compared with ours.

Becky - I have exalted you for reminding me of the unfortunate fact that the less newsworthy events are, the more attention they seem to get.

If such a wedding does take place, I can sort of figure out how it might be beneficial to Sarko and Carli. Do you think it be of any positive value to Paris or France ?

One good piece of news : Sarko has lost 7 POINTS in popularity in one single month according to the last polls . Of course this is not all due to the Carla affair, but still, this reassures me about the sanity of the French people ...

Tacky and vulgar are the only words that comes to mind about this whole affair. Is ANY presidential "work" taking place these days or is his entire existence just about play dates?

I am wondering if the media covering for this event is an illustration of change of France’s political life. Will ideas, debates and speeches take second rang to the peoplelization of the head of state?
It has often been reported that the president is an admirer of the USA, someone would remind him that when you want to imaged someone you should pick his good sites not his worst.
Sarko devrait relire Molière: «Quand sur une personne on prétend se régler, C'est par les beaux côtés qu'il lui faut ressembler.»

It makes me very sad to see the French media acting like ours. I do believe that it hurts a society when the focus is on such things as opposed to real policy decisions...perhaps if the media in this country had been a little less focused on Brittney and her ilk, we wouldn't be in quite the mess we're in. So I do believe it's relevant for us to discuss the whole Sarko Carla media circus, in that context. I know that I am very interested in hearing the opinions of our international posters!

Anne,
I was telling my husband last night about your reference to Sarko being a Bling bling. So, while reading our morning paper, there it was on print - he was actually called President Bling Bling and should be honeymooning with his presidency instead of planning his honeymoon with Carla. Besides, the French do not think Carla is of First Lady material. Only time will tell how this will all come out!

Oh Anne.....
I'm listening to my usual Classic Rock Station this morning while running around getting ready to leave for work..the announcer says"The President of France"...so naturally my ears prick up and then she says"says he is very interested in the ex-girlfriend of a member of the band for the next song..and she was stolen away from the band member by Mick Jagger!" They then played a song by Cream.
I can see how this would not be the "media attention" you want for your President. But then again look at ours.

Weren't there some scandals surronding Chirac also? I really cannot imagine what she sees in Sarko. He is not as cute or as wealthy as some of her former loves.

True, LL, but one suspects she had a lot more class (not to mention, the best interests of the State at heart).

ABC News reported last night that Sarko held a news conference yesterday, the plan for which was to discuss a matter of state.
It degenerated into a speech primarily devoted to his romance, capped off by his own announcement of his and Carla's intention to marry in February.

I guess I don't know Sarko very well, but this seems so bizare to me. Kinda like Bill Clinton marries Madonna.
