Anne,
Better wait until after the elections here!
I was thinking Australia during the Reagan/Daddy Bush kingdoms.
If things go badly this time I'll be heading your way....we must have an intervention for Sarko... maybe he'll go to Boston and Happy can have a go? Cement his US ties??

I mentioned to my husband after watching our polictal news last night that we shoud seriously consider moving to Franch. As for Carla, it appears that she has ADD when it comes to men. So don't worry Anne she will most likely move on to someone like Sting soon enough.

Oh Anne, I'm with Randy on this one...Carla is nothing compared to what we've lived with over the past 7 years!!!!!!!!
Suzanne - depending on the outcome of the next election, we may join you in France. We can be neighbors ;D

Randi, Suzanne and Sister - You misunderstood me . It is not Carla the problem . What I and many French are aghast at is Sarko's "bling-bling" style of presidency, and Carla ("the Rolex of the female sex") is only a part of it .
Generally speaking, shameless showing-off is badly considered in France . So Sarko's showbiz style is appalling for a president, and my fear is that there will be no way back after him, that after seing this for several years, many people will get used to this vulgar and superficial style, not only for their president but for themselves too . It is difficult for me to explain how I feel (and how many other people feel too, by talking to people or reading papers), but I have this feeling that Sarko's style will bring some mentality changes (a bit Hollywood style ?) in France that I don't like at all .
BTW, I honestly don't think that I am an old conservative cow . I am quite liberal and open-minded, generally speaking . But this is just something completely different .

Anne, are you saying that there is a fear that he is too superficial, and that this may seem acceptable if people become accustomed to that style/manner in the president?

Yes, something like that . It is not actually SAID, but this is part of the general feeling about him . But most of the time we don't even think that far, we just discover his newest "exploit" in newspapers or on TV with a gaping mouth and a "Oh no, I can't believe it "

Unfortunately, we in the US have had many, many years of what would be called "an empty suit" in the president's office . . . .

I read a huge and fascinating article in "Le Monde Diplomatique" last week, about the American roots of Sarko's ideology . That's how I got the idea that I could just as well emigrate directly to the US ...

Is his divorce even final yet???

Yes, Suzanne--that's what started this whole "scandal" in the first place--the divorce was evidently final the day they announced they were splitting up (Nov 18 I believe, the day the strikes started). Very odd, but somehow he worked it out legally.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would marry so shortly after his divorce.

Dearest Gitte (or should I call you Thelma or Louise? ;D) - If it weren't the slightest bit interesting, you wouldn't have commented, would you?

Well, all I can say about the interest level is, "Anna Nicole Smith"! It seems that the less truly newsworthy some event is, the more attention it attracts!

Come now Becky. If I see one more thing about Brittney Spears on my TV I'm going to hurl. Poor Anna. LOL

Suzanne, I agree - I've managed to block out the Brittney "news" and Anna was a sad case (but still, the apparent public interest is equivalent to people gawking at a roadside accident scene).

Is that her son on Sarko's shoulders?

Oh! Actually it is Bruni's son (I was assuming initially that it was Sarko's son). Photo caption is : "Carla Bruni, right, and Nicolas Sarkozy, carrying Bruni's son Aurelien Enthoven, tour Petra, Jordan, on Saturday."
