Very interesting reading thus far, LuckyLuc! Thanks for referencing that site! I am enjoying it! A couple things it brings to mind (and I am not even done reading it)..one is about that "screen" thing! How come windows in France don't have screens? Is it because it is cooler most of the time? But we do know it gets hot in the summer and aren't there bugs to keep out? This has mystified me before! I can relate to David's mention about seeing in other people's eyes the dire concern when listening to a those of us who struggle with the French language! lol

Yes, now I am done reading the article! That is hysterical about the "waiting room" incident! (I had read that in the New Yorker and chuckled then too!). Isn't that a nightmare type scenario? ha! (but see what happens when you pretend too much to understand French (or any other second language) but you don't fully!)
Well, he mentions one place he would recommend visitors to see is the marionette show in Luxembourg. I went to the one near the Eiffel tower! I wonder why that one seems less known! But it was enchanting and so fun (old fashioned!)! Coincidentally enough, I had a dream about that last night even...was considering going in to see a show in my dream! Had forgotten this dream until I read this article ! ha!

Thanks so much for this post! I've loved his writing for years (read most of "Me Talk Pretty" on a plane, probably annoying those around me because I just could not stifle the laughter).

I've never seen a flying bug in Paris. We have our windows open all the time in the warmer seasons and nothing ever comes in. It's about the only place on the planet I can go without becoming a mosquito all-you-can-eat buffet.

I'm listening to "This American Life" at this very moment and the third act today is David Sedaris talking about an American couple's experience with a "pickpocket" in Paris...isn't that funny?!
(And it WAS funny - it was from Me Talk Pretty One Day...I had forgotten that one and I was laughing out loud ;D )

???There are no flying insects in Paris? Now, that's just not fair.

I live very close to a forest and we have hardly any flying insects entering the house either . Unless of course we leave the windows opened at dusk with the lights on inside the house, but that's calling for trouble ...

I would love to not have to worry about screens! I wonder what the difference is (climate?)...why there are no flying insects in Paris and apparently elsewhere in France! As you say, GoldenMama...that is just not fair!

Why, I am surprised ? I was in the Western States of the USA last summer and I don't remember ever having been bothered by flying bugs ...

Generally, at least in some areas of the States, misqiutos can come out in the evening! As we have screens, I can only speculate, but one imagines they could fly inside home sans screens and be a nuisance in the summer. There can also be flies. We used to enjoy a beach house by a lake when I was a child, and a lot of flies (at least on one visit that I recall) got into the screened (!) front porch/room (a blend )). I recall sleeping in a bed in that room as child one summer and looking at the ceiling and seeing a lot of flies! Yikes! So not having to worry about flying insects does sound splendid..but I just don't understand fully why France does not have that problem and we do! hmm!

I live in Paris and have to sleep with a mosquito net in the summer months... must have to do with being across the street from a park.

In Paris, even the mosquitoes are well-behaved and would not dare entering a house without permission !!
