Some places are just blessed with fewer flying annoyances! I have seen flies and mosquitoes only rarely anywhere in France (even in rural areas), who knows why! In the San Francisco area, the same is true -- many people do not have screens on their houses at all (I do, but mainly because even one errant mosquito can totally ruin a night for me!).

Wow! I didn't know San Francisco is relatively safe from flying bugs! Huh! You are lucky that way, Becky! Of course, back in the days of yore, some people in certain areas especially down south in the States (e.g. New Orleans) slept with nets around their beds (before window screens) and that was wise not only for comfort..but they didn't know it at first, but those pesky misquitos were also the carriers of the dreaded yellow fever back then!
