Our eldest daughter came around tonight and said the strangest but most exiting thing! She has been planning her wedding for around August 2009, tonight she said out of the blue "I would love to get married in Paris"......Well that was it !!!! our heads are racing now...She said that she didn't care about a massive wedding so long as the most important people were there, this would be approx 10-15 people possibly, the budget would be around the £8,500 GBP for the wedding, we would all pay our own accommodation and travel. Now ok, this was only suggested tonight and is very much "up in the air" but I want to hear your thoughts and suggestions with regards venue, legalities, paperwork, protocol etc..........I know I can search on the internet but will wait for your replies first as you give some great advice and suggestions......Hey!!! If this one comes off it will be a perfect excuse to return!!!! "Ooooh I could crush a grape" as they say ;D
Oh forgot to say, we escaped to Scotland (not Gretna Green) outside on the banks of a loch surrounded by mountains and did it, so Paris is possible!

I am not an expert on weddings in France anywhere but two things worth considering: - There is a rather lengthy French residency requirement for at least one of the marrying couple. My memory is hazy on the exact time but I believe residency is required for 1-2 months in advance of the ceremony.
- Official weddings take place at the Hotel de Ville or Marie. While church weddings are indeed popular, they are not officially sanctioned. Most couples get married twice: at town hall and in a church.
Others more qualified can fill in the details. N.B. Mrs. Sarastro and I were married some years ago (I believe in a legal ceremony) on the island of Anguilla, also a very romantic location.

To add to Sarastro's comments, the official wedding at town hall must be FIRST, and then the optional church wedding second. (in case that was not obvious).
hum, gittek, I am blond- but, is your question serious ?? I mean I don't think anyone cares so much about us when we are not breathing their air any longer, and you don't even want some square footage in a cemetary, so I don't see how there could be a prob !

:oI think its funny how I keep getting surprised at certain facts that come to light about people on this board.
Do you find that you have a picture of someone in your mind, and then you are surprised to find out that you are wrong?
I would never have thought andiandgaz would have had a child old enough to be getting married!

Thank you goldenmama , in which case you will be absoluetly shocked by the fact that I am a grandma then LOL I was made a grandma at the age of 33 by my step daughter (the one who now is getting married) My own blood daughter is almost 19 (I had her young) so technically it is possible!!! I love it though, my grandson Blake is so delightful MOST of the time ;D

Well, marriage... It is hard to say, the good thing for you is that you are, well mostly , EU citizens, this usually makes things easier. While I am not sure you can get married at the Mairie without residency I am almost sure you can get married in church, the next step would just be to "legalize" the marriage in the UK. I would do it step by step and call any church in Paris, like super naively, and say " hey I want to get married at your place, what do I have to do?" In waytogo's thread about America in Paris there is also the address of the American cathedral in Paris, maybe a starting point at least to get an English speaker on the phone. I haven't got married yet so my advice has to stop here but £ 8.500 for 15 people (~1000€ per person) without accommodation is a pretty good budget for a nice restaurant followed by a good party!

The American Church is another good resource. May Americans have the legal ceremony in the US and then come to Paris to affirm their vows with friends and family. That seems to be the easiest way. If a church is not your thing, you could always do it on a Yacht de Paris boat.
As for the budget, if she decides to go for, let us know. It is always a blast spending someone else's money and the options in Paris are remarkable!

Thanks for the replies....at first I thought it would be a non starter with the months residency, I then get the fact that we are in the EU (of course) so this opens it up again!!! YIPPEE.....Some of the money will obviously go on wedding clothes ie: dress, suits, bridesmaids etc........I would assume that the honeymoon would be there too and we would all come home and leave them to it (oooooh).....I think we will have to have a discussion about the possibility and then I will get back to you on if its going ahead.....I agree, it would be very romantic and what a story it would be! Keep you posted, Andi x
