George - glad you've made your way back to the forum. I enjoyed laughing my way through your trip reports. Have you seen the thread with reviews of apartments that members have stayed in? Here's a link: www.truffaut.proboards.com/thread/4276/apartments-stayedAnd I can confirm I still have eyes for pompiers. Last visit I spoke with the guys doing fundraising on my street and told them my dad has been a volunteer fireman for 60+ years. We arranged to do an exchange. My dad sent a t-shirt and a patch from his department, and they sent a shirt from their department.

Obviously it was someone French who coined the phrase "plus ca change" etc etc etc. I am glad to see that word "pompiers" still stirs the souls of so many female posters on this site. I once asked, facetiously, why the ladies never went gaga over Bank managers and accountants in the same way.
I am sure that in the event of a fire, a husky bank manager would sling you over his shoulder just as well as a pompier. Whether he would be able to climb down the ladder is another story of course. In my case as long as I didn't lose my glasses,I am sure that i would make at least the top rung of the ladder and after that, gravity would always take hold.
Be good. George

I also appreciate the site and joined because it dealt with items related to Paris and France with categories for other items. However, part of the vitality came from people who not only shared an interest in Paris but began to care about one another. That is very similar to what exists on Slow Travel/France and quite different from Trip Advisor. I know I cared when your apartment was damaged and enjoyed following the renovations. A great deal of personal stuff goes into private messages. The spam is what has been driving many away. I do not really use facebook but am on it for my children and grandchildren. I do not wish to increase my use of it or other social media. Of course, you are the owner of the site so have the right to decide its future. Enjoy Paris. Plan to be there in December/January for the holidays and hope to connect with some other OPFers then. Ditto NYC in August. Enjoy the remainder of your trip, it looks like the weather is better there than here. I believe I am quite late to this party, or whatever this is. I'm sorry your forum did not materialize to be what you wished it to be. As someone who runs a website, forum, and chat together with my spouse, I understand how frustrating that can be a bit. I'm thinking perhaps it isn't the friendly banter that has been so saddening to you, just based on my experiences there. On the other hand - This may sound harsh, and I apologize in advance, but - perhaps you may have failed to appreciate what a wonderful community has grown up here? Certainly, I do think the driving force ought to remain Paris, but perhaps you could just allow for a large "Off Topic" section? It seems to me without getting to know and enjoy each other a bit, it would be awfully hard to share in our joy in Paris really. I know if I didn't care for the people and community on any of the web forums I frequent, I would not remain. It is those personal glimpses and personal touches that make me think "Oh! I must share this with the folks over at x forum!" when I see something wonderful online relating to the topic of the forum. Finally: I hope you enjoyed your last visit to Paris and it proved refreshing for you. I know you must have had a lot to deal with after the fire, and it must have been frustrating to find your retreat was become yet another stress on your mind and spirit.

Hi everyone. I finally figured out how to get logged back in. I'm sorry I joined the list of missing friends. Back in the day, I used to log in at work. After I retired from business at the end of 2009, little did I know I would end up in Government service and so busy, weeks would go by between times I would peek in. I got so far behind I hated to log in and post because I had missed so much of the action here. That said I feel compelled to Chime in to thank everyone for all the information shared over the years. While I never actually got to meet anyone in person, there are countless times I've referenced something I learned from my friends from Denmark, Bolton, Israel, Washington, Boston, California, etc..... I always took a bit of pride that my only trip report is on page1. We still have not gotten back to Paris. Our oldest grand children are now our summer travel partners and we are working our way through the U.S. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to you all, especially to Doug who put this all in motion and to Sylvia who at the outset of OP me a pm at TA telling me to come over and check out where all the experts had gone. Happy travels! Ray

OMG! Ray, you've come back! Just want to let you know that I think of you often because I named one of our outdoor kitties Grady. She's orange and was born shortly after your redhead grandson was born. At the time she was born, I had no idea she was a female, but I wanted to name her immediately and you had recently told us about the birth of your little Grady.

Hi Ray--it's so good to hear from you! Hope you can pop in more often. Shoesy, it's so cute that you named your kitty after Ray's grandson! Love it

I am so late to this it is almost embarrassing! I still plan to pop in and hope to catch up with some friends and posts. I don't see any current postings from Doug here so has he given up the forum?

Yes, as he explained in his post, the forum isn't what he intended it to be anymore and he & Luc have lost interest. They might pop in occasionally, but for the most part we're on our own here! Due to all the spam that was happening, they did shut off the option for new members to join to keep the spam-bots from posting.

After last year's disappointment, when we were booked and had to cancel at the last minute due to illness, we decided that in 2014 it would be Stellas choice as it was her 70th.She has always had a thing about Savannah and wanted to go there so, off we went.Had a great time and I enjoyed the 3 day drive down and back.Mainly because of the pralines and pecan logs I stocked up on while in the South. Next year it is my turn and have finally decided to return to Paris despite clarion calls from Vegas and Rome.Stella nixed Rome as she didn't want to have to nurse me after I fall from a lump of marble or a pile of rocks and I would lose the house, car and firstborn if I went to Vegas. So Paris it is next April.
It is great fun looking at airlines and we have decided to fly Icelandair via Reykyavik mainly because we have never seen Iceland even from the air and it has the great benefit of being cheap. We have been looking at a studio in the Opera area which is reasonably priced and is VRBO 582106.We know it is small but we like the area and so w will wait until Sep or Oct to book it up.
Stella and I hope that you are all well and that maybe some of you will be in Paris next April.

I know they once had a deal where they'd bus you to the Blue Lagoon between flights! Looking forward to hearing how it goes!

George - are you staying in Iceland for a few days or flying directly on to Paris. I think an Icelandair ticket allows you to stay for several days before flying on to Paris.

We are still thinking about staying in Iceland for at least one night. As far as I am concerned if the Aurora is on then lead me to them. I think Stella is of the same mind.I know that Icelandair used to give stop overs and that is something else we will look into.Do they still eat seal and walrus blubber up there?

Not sure about seal & walrus blubber but somehow I was convinced to taste the "delicacy" made with putrified shark. I guess it's an acquired taste... Even without the Aurora, Iceland is worth a visit. I believe Icelandair still allows free stops in Reykjavik for up to a week.

Janet As to the title of this thread...with my early departure from the BBAOPFGT we did not get to discuss the possibility of a new forum....any new thoughts there? We have our little group now it seems, but can't add new memebers...good ones..not computerized..not that I have anything against robots!

Geordy,
We didn't really discuss it at the lunch. Yes - it's a nice group here, but so small and we can't add new members. It would be easy enough to start a different forum on proboards and I'd be happy to be administrator, but I was hoping to find another hosting site that made it easier to post pictures. I haven't done any research on it though.

As I recall, when this all went "south" Doug said we were welcome to take this over and I would imagine we could then add new members. There is information both on the private messages and old threads that I do still access. Would hate to lose that. Anyway, will check to see what is decided and will go along with the decision.

Has there been any other talk about a new group or will this one continue? I hope so. However, if it's not possible, there is always yahoogroups and you can even start a group on facebook. One benefit of facebook is that it's very easy to share photos.
