If you are heading to Paris on a budget, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of the book Quiet Corners of Paris before you go. All but one of the "corners" mentions are free. We used it the last time we were there and discovered so many wonderful spots we would never have found on our own. For the low cost of the book (available on Amazon) you will have days of free entertainment.

In 2008 we went to 26 of the approximately 70 places covered in the book. Some were ordinary, a few were closed, but most were very interesting and worthwhile. Next May we will revisit some of them and search out others we have not yet seen. BTW, the small-sized book fits easily in most day purses.

How did I miss this Katharine?! I think it was also discussed on another thread. I LOVE this little book! It's a must for discovering Paris.

I am not sure, Darcy. When I am really longing for a taste of Paris, I pick it up and thumb through it, "visiting" someplace new. It is on my side table now that I am planning my three weeks next June. Invaluable!

We have the book and went to several of the sites in 2008. Half of the fun was finding the places and then sitting and enjoying them.

I just got from Amazon, " Walks Through Lost Paris A Journey into the Heart of Historic Paris" by Leonard Pitt 2006. Kind of a "then and now" approach. Haven't gotten in to it too much yet...the print is tiny and it is a heavy little paperback so it won't be traveling . But I hope to get some ideas!

geordy, that guide book was in our apartment on our last trip. I really liked it so traded it for one of mine and brought it home with me!

Amazon is currently selling the book "Unexplored Paris" used as well as new for upwards of $60.
While I would love to read it, that is just too expensive. Will search other book dealers.

I really wanted to get "Unexplored Paris" too after Gitte recommended it. But on Amazon it is over 60.00 US. In a soft cover! Why is it so expensive

I have been following "Unexplored Paris" on Amazon for ages, since Mimi mentioned it on another thread, hoping that the price would come down, but no luck. I wonder why this book is sooo expensive???

Gitte, I was slightly offended when I read your first paragraph. Yes, I know that good things don't come cheap - but $62.00 for a guide book?!, I was thinking to myself.
As I read the rest of your post, I couldn't stop laughing, at myself! I spent $52.00 at a local bookstore yesterday for things I didn't really need. Well, I did buy the current issue of France, so I did need that, but the rest? I could have done without them and that would have paid for more than half of Unexplored Paris!
Thank you for encouaging us to get our priorities straight!! ;D

Hey Darcy , your French is good enough to read the French edition. It's only 18.50 Euro from Amazon.fr

Gitte,
I am 74 years old and I don't need lectures on where and how I spend my money or establish my priorities.
The new copy of the 2003 edition in English is much higher than $60. It is over $100. Sorry but I will not spend that on any book. My decision, my choice.
I never buy shoes on impulse, nor do I buy or eat any of the foods you are listing.
I have three grandchildren, several charities for animals I donate to, and other worthwhile causes and prefer to spend $100 plus dollars there.
In the future think before you preach.

Regarding Gitte's recommendation of Unexplored Paris ( Paris Secret et Insolite ), it is indeed available in BOTH French and English for 18,05E each on amazon.fr. If you order it online it can be sent to a Paris address. If you spend 20E or more, the shipping is free! (amazon.fr: enter "livres en anglais" + "trouilleux" and you will see it along with other interesting suggestions. I do not know what the international shipping charges would be, but it may be worth checking out. I plan to order some of these books the day before I leave for Paris and have them sent to my apt. there, so thanks for the info, Gitte. BTW, Gitte's blog diaries have given me plenty of places of which I was previously unaware.

Unexplored Paris is also available, in both French and English, at 18,05E through FNAC. So, perhaps it may be available in one of their stores in Paris. Mary

Do you think one of the English bookstores in Paris might have it? Does anyone have info on English bookstores other than the Shakespeare and Co store?? On another note, I didn't know you can delete one of your own posts! That is a good feature.
