I love searching this link Les Plus Beaux Villages de Francefor dreaming about taking a cartrip around in the countryside with no pre-bookings made (is that possible, even ?) You get a map of the area/region - also with suggestions for other places to visit - plus links to the towns' official websites. Obs! Note at the bottom of the site, that they would love to have photos and descriptions sent in to update the list. But I doubt if I'll ever get further away from Paris than can be reached by a train-daytrip Perhaps in 2010........... What are YOUR personal candidates for the most beautiful French villages ?

Whether it is possible to tour the countryside without pre-bookings depends totally of the area + the time of the year : I can predict you big problems if you try that in Provence during the summer . And since you cancelled this year that wonderful few-days trip of yours to Cassis in order not to spoil any precious Paris days, you are right to doubt whether you will ever make a real countryside trip . Or maybe when you live in Paris FOR REAL as a happy retiree Cité de Trévise ?...

That looks a very interesting site GitteK, I'm sad that I'm now too old to take the plunge and do these things. Let that be a warning to all you youngsters, and not so young, out there. Get out and about France and England, into the backwoods and get under the skin of these countries. And here is a web blog which shows what you can do if you set your mind to it (for you GitteK) daysontheclaise.blogspot.com/ . He contributes to the TA Paris forum as Wizard of Oz.

Mossie - I think you meant to write "Wizard of Aus".

Thanks for this great site, Gitte.
Mossie - so funny, I was just reading that blog a minute ago before I came here.

It looks lovely, Becky. I think we should all arrange to have a nice GTG there.

I second the idea of Shoesy to have a GTG in Becky's village - lovely spot.

If you're in Provence it's just a case of throwing a brick and you hit half a dozen weep-makingly beautiful villages. My favourite so far is Roussillon in the Luberon.

I loved Roussillon - one of the war monuments had an inscription about "Roussillon weeping for her children," and it has always stayed with me.

I have seen so many of the designated beautiful villages. My favorites are, Saint=Guilham-le-Desert, La Courvertoirade, Cores, Le Baux( which I first saw like Gordes, before the tourists discovered them), Peruges, Ainhoa, Collanges-La-Rouge, angles-sur-Anglin

I love the idea of a GTG in Aubeterre - but the village likely would go into collective shock and never recover! (Of course, that's not a reason to refrain . . . . )

LOL, Becky. I got a mental picture of the tongue-clucking that might go on...but then again, maybe we're selling the French short. They may decide we're having way too much fun and join us

I am also a fan of Roussillon, but add Eygalieres, Menerbes, Chinon, and Blois (does that qualify as a city rather than a village?). I am anxious to add more to the list!

khutson, we stayed every year in Eygalieres at a hotel but the couple got divorced and it's now a family home. our final year there, Didi forgot to tell us he closed the place so when we arrived, we were to be the only guests there(very spooky at night) He had a chef arrive every morning to prepare breakfast for us. One visit I'll never forget!

No need to cry, Gitte. Have you forgotten how often YOU go to Paris? And don't forget the fact that you have many vacation days, most of which are spent in our favorite city.
