I just found out from the grapevine (actually my daughter, who is spending her last evening in Paris) that my sister, who was also there until today, HATED.......yes HATED Berthillon ice-cream !!! Can we be related?

Okay, clearly there is something (or someone!) in your family tree who has been kept from you! (Either that, or you got all the gourmet genes!)

The truth is that our taste in food tends to differ.............but Berthillon ice-cream ?

Isn´t it because she tried Argentine icecream? If so, she has a very good reason to hate Brethillon icecream, or any other icecream in the world.

Shoesy, that's blasphemy! The only reasonable explanation is that she was a foundling that your parents took in. Surely, there are no blood ties.

Maybe it's just a case of sibling rivalry - knowing how much YOU love Berthillion, she decided to hate it (I mean, there has to be some deep seeded psychological reason )

Maybe she just has enough sense to prefer Amorino!

Surely the answer is to have your sister immediately return to Paris, where you will meet her and illuminate her flavor by flavor!

Truffaut - I forgot to mention in my post that she really did like Amorino........... but to HATE Berthillon? How will I fall asleep tonight? Oh well... I just remembered that I've been having trouble falling asleep these days anyway.

I like both Amorino and Berthillon. But the fairies sometimes slip a ringer into the cradle so if it has to be either you or your sister. What about your daughter?

Actually, my daughter never mentioned if she had had Berthillon or Amorino, and I forgot to ask her because we were busy talking about other things. She did mention a favorite restaurant, the name of which I can't remember right now.

Shoesy, this is not really a bad thing. Think in terms of supply and demand. If EVERYONE wanted Berthillon, then there would be less for you and the price may sky rocket. Mez

That makes a lot of sense, Mez. Aside from that, I guess I have to realize that everyone likes different things, and being siblings doesn't mean having the same taste, especially when it comes to food and drinks. Now that I think about it, I can't live without my morning coffee (having a cup right now ) and my sister doesn't drink coffee at all.

:-[Actually Shoesy, I have been embarassed to report that I was the ONLY one in my family to get such a thrill out of that ice cream! My husband kind of shrugged about it, and my kids thought it was "ok"! And they ordered vanilla! I am absolutely positive that I am related to those kids as I vividly remember the births!

goldenmama - I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with family members who didn't like B. ice-cream. Seriously though, as a general rule, I try to be cautious about making recommendations because I know that people have very different taste and they also have expectations that vary. In addition, I also don't like to feel "responsible" for other people being disappointed in a restaurant or a hotel. For example, when I tell people about the Hotel Britannique, which my husband I liked very much, I emphasize its disadvantages (the very small rooms and the tiny elevator) as well as the advantages (very central location and immaculate, charming rooms). I might tell people to "check it out", but I'd never tell people that they'd love staying there.

I wonder what flavor your sister had...maybe one with the more "floral notes" (Gianda Food Network Weekend Getaways last nite..she was In Paris! She got chocolat and framboise and mentioned that!) Tastes do vary and I can see some folks not being overly impressed(esp. with all the hype) but to hate it??? I'll have to try the gelato this trip, as well as Berthillon! (again..soo many flavors..I've had vanilla, chocolate, reaspberry, apricot, pistachio. and that is all I remember, may have had coconut!)

LOL I understand about different tastes, I'm like you I love Berthillon my favorite is a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a scoop of raspberry sorbet but strawberry if good, and chocolate and. My oldest sister drinks regular (actually instant at home, blah!!) coffee with 1/2 & 1/2 will not even taste flavored coffee, cappuccino, etc. even takes a cooler with her if traveling by car with 1/2 & 1/2) the weird one though is my son. If he didn't look so much like both (ex and myself) of us we'd think the hospital had mixed up babies. He will not eat anything hot. Mexican, Chinese, hot mustard, etc. Now my ex and I both the hotter the better.

This is an update, everyone. In a short message from my niece, who was replying to an e-mail I had sent her expressing my shock over this B. thing, she clarified that her mom (my dear sister) disliked the "little pieces" in her ice-cream, and she added that they all thought the sorbet was "amazing". So, I guess I can say that my sister simply ordered a flavor that didn't suit her, and she actually loved the sorbet. (IrishRovr would be very pleased to hear that! ) I assume when she had reported her B. experience to my daughter, she was so appalled at having found little who-knows-what in her ice-cream that it made her remember only the negative. (BTW, she refuses to eat salads that have nuts in them, so she is a bit fussy, I'd say. )

Further information, which I obtained from a little while ago from my daughter, who is now at home: The ice-cream that my sister didn't like was caramel. As for my daughter, she was very happy with the B. products that she tasted, and her favorite was banana. As for her new hubby (I like the sound of that ), he flipped over the coffee, which is my favorite too ! Boy, do I know how to choose a SIL ! ;D

After just having spoken to my sister for an hour and a half (oops - I don't want to see that phone bill ) I finally got the story straight. Yes, it's true that she detested the caramel ice-cream (not only because of the little pieces in it, but also because of the actual flavor), but she wanted to be very fair to Berthillon so on another occasion she bought vanilla, which she found to be absolutely delicious. ;D The funny thing is she had actually asked for banana, but they must have misunderstood her, and she ended up with vanilla. Her daughters really loved their sorbet, and they agreed that it was the best they had ever had. As for Amorino, my sister loved it, especially the mango.
