As for being misunderstood...one solo night I stopped for a late night people watching nitecap at the cafe portion of one of the big Montparnasse spots, Dome, Select or Rotonde? Anyway I ordered un cafe and my nitecap of choice. What I got was my cafe and an omelette!!  The waiter was very nice..didn't even flinch at my "ordering" the cafe with the omelette, rather than after!  So which, with my "American" accent sounds like omelette..cognac, poivre william, or calvados?? Don't remember what I said but it would have been one of those!  |

As for my sister's ice-cream, at first she didn't even realize that she had gotten the wrong flavor because the vanilla was yellowish. But as she was eating it.....and enjoying it.......it dawned on her that it was definitely vanilla. She has no idea how she pronounced her requested flavor, (how can one totally mess up the word "banana"?) but the important thing is that she ended up enjoying her Berthillon treat. ;D

Shoesy, I hadn't caught up to this thread until tonight, and was relieved to read further down that your sister DOES in fact like B's. I sure didn't want to hear that you'd have to disown her! About 15 years ago while on a Caribbean cruise, our waiter had such a thick accent that we thought he'd been saying "banana" ice cream all week, only to discover on the last night he'd actually been saying "vanilla" all along! |

That's very interesting, Annette, because I'm having a hard time seeing the resemblance between the pronunciation of"vanilla" and "banana".
As for disowning my sister, I could never do that for 2 reasons: 1) She's too nice, and 2) Her house is my "hotel" whenever I go to the States. ;D

Where we got tripped up, Shoesy, is he couldn't pronounce "v", so it came out as "b", and they both have the same number of syllables. It was just a guess |

That definitely makes sense, Annette. Now that I think about it, in some languages the "b" and "v" aren't pronounced very differently.
