I had to laugh about comments on shoes. I get sales updates (email) from Easy Spirit. back in Feb I saw this pair of boots (similar to ones pictured but solid color.) thought these might be good for trip. Since I must wear ortho inserts I have to have shoes with high toes (so they don't rub against shoe), so I can't buy shoes by mail, online. So I called every large department store in the area to see if they carried these boots. Nowhere, so I look at the sale page again. "available online". teach me to read the fine print!! So I looked like a tourist with my white tennies for walking.

Gitte - I'm shocked that those sandals are supposed to be for women. You probably have the wrong impression of Israeli fashion. Believe me.......I've never seen any woman wear those monstrous things. Penny - Easy Spirit makes really comfortable footwear. I've bought both their sneakers and sandals.

You guys are kiling me here...lol...Shoesy and Gitte are going to start an international incident over the d**n shoes...Gitte, I must admit that I wear shoes that look a bit like your eccos. The heck with style, I'll take comfort any day (altho I draw the line at wearing socks with them...I DO have my standards).
I have a girlfriend who is a very stylish girly-girl and makes horrid comments about my shoes constantly...right to my face! She just hates them. So you're making me laugh, reminding me of my friend and I.

Shoesy- I have several pairs of Easy Spirits but I have to try them on to make sure my inserts will fit. these inserts are custom made and don't fit in all shoes. the type of shoe that is recommended cost about $150., is not covered by insurance unless you are diabetic. I'm paying for all my years of going barefooted.

What about Birkenstocks ? I will go shopping in Germany on Wednesday and plan to buy a pair of Birkenstocks Gizeh with a nice colourful pattern . Birkenstocks are very comfortable and I think that the Gizeh don't look like oldies' . I am curious to know what our shoe-fashion-specialists think about that ?

I don't want to incur more wrath from our Gitte here but those sandals make me want to run to the closet,(and floor "puddles" of shoes, under the chair next to the closet, and a few other places )and pet my shoes!! And Birkenstocks..? I do not know that style but generally speaking..well no. Like the Naot boot!! I am considering Keds for September..the new ballet flat/skimmer styles. And I need a new pair of comfy sandals, with a bit of a heel or wedge. I have taken Andre Assou Featherweights many times...too many now and they need to be replaced!

I just can't understand how anyone over the age of 21 can walk around Paris in ballet flats/skimmers. My feet are swelling just THINKING about it...geordy, doesn't the fact that they have no support bother your feet or am I being old again???

anne - I wore nothing BUT birkenstocks when I was pregnant...they were very comfortable. But I think I developed an association between wearing birkenstocks and being pregnant because I haven't worn them since!! Over here they are usually associated with what is sometimes called a "granola", meaning a "hippie". Or perhaps being German - my sister is a "granola" AND she lives in Germany...she wears them proudly!! ;D

Geordy -- what you do with your shoes in the privacy of your own closet (or chair, or wherever) is your business alone!
I get Andre Assou for espadrilles -- that's my favorite brand -- because they do have a modest wedge heel plus the fabric body is totally pliable and stretchy, and I have yet to see any woman who doesn't look good in espadrilles, whether with a skirt or with jeans/slacks -- plus they aren't very expensive so easy to have several pair in different colors. I do like Easy Spirit for sneaker-type shoes, because they are pretty comfortable (also Ecco, closed shoes or sandals, for walking a lot).

Ha! I see whilst I was away, an international event between Denmark and Isreal over shoes was underway! Yes, indeedy~ Well, hmmm...while I won't run out to get those Naot sandals that GitteK has shown us...I do know there are some nice looking Naot sandals (I think I once looked up your pair, Shoesy (or did I? Seems familiar like I did and they were v. attractive as I recall!)). I do really like your boots, SisterEurope (you say you have a sister in Germany , eh? B^)) . Some reason my computer did not pull up the brown ones, but I do like your black ones~! Anyway....I am not so offended by those GitteK Ecco sandals as frankly I had pondered them myself last year (whilst looking for comfy shoes to wear to Paris...sorry ,Geordy for disillusioning you about moi! B^))(I did get another pair of Eccos (non sandals) that my children disparage me about, but they were tres comfy to bop around...alternated them with hip and happenin' black Pumas !). Anyway..back to Naots..seems I have been hearing more about them lately...they seem to be up and coming...at least to my awareness! Shoes...I always have to put in my two cents when the conversation swings to shoes! ha! (or ahem..more..as I see the size of this post! Oh, dear! ) Oh, as to ballets..the closest I have to those are black Mary Jane Sketchers..tres comfy!

Happy, What can I say I was blessed with perfect feet! And that is not a boast, or being cute..it is(or sadly was ) a fact and a blessing when I see what some people go through! I have been a 8B since teen years. They almost always fit and are comfortable. I've always been able to order by mail,,and now internet. No problem with heels. Never did the wear the sneakers to walk and take the subway to work thing. But I appreciated this "gift" and always bought "good" shoes other than a few trendy items not meant for serious wear. The ballet flats I alude to..Black all leather "quilted Chanel" look from the French Sole on Lexington Ave here. I am on my second pair. They have been on every Paris (and other) trips I've taken in the last 8 years or so and served be very well! However a recent foot/ankle injury put together with not working full time(thus spending more time in sneakers and sandals then "real, business" shoes) have changed things a bit! And the jobs I do have require standing on the tootsies for hours!! And yes...getting older! So I'll be choosing carefully for the upcoming trip!

The only time I'm willing to be uncomfortable in ballet flats is..............when I dance ballet. ;D

geordy, my sister is like you. I marveled at her the first time we went to Paris many years ago. I couldn't figure out how she could wear cheap shoes with no arch support and do all the walking we did. My feet were very tired and I had good shoes on. Hers didn't bother her a bit. I'm going to take a look at the Naot's. A girlfriend of mine swears by them. I've always been a Merrell fan myself, but I can't find any new ones that I really love.

Happy, Have you seen the Merrell Plaza Bandeau? I bought these and love them. They are like a Mary Jane style...so comfortable!

Oh ladies, if I've learned one thing from all the exhaustive "which shoes should I wear?" threads, it's that what works for someone else, will just KILL me...or vice versa. Feet are, apparently, like snowflakes...no two alike! I will keep looking at Merrells because my feet really love them, but I don't care for Mary Janes. I always feel like a kindergartener in them. And here's a memory for any good Catholic girls out there: remember when you couldn't wear your shiny patent leather mary janes to school because the nuns were convinced the boys were using their reflection to look up your skirt? (They likely were too! )

I am convinced that my recent fall was partly connected to my very comfortable FinnComfort sandals. They are great for walking but clunky in the front and i think that the tip of one caught on the uneven curb and--down I went! Will take my trusty Mephistos--Rush model and may get a second pair to use on the France trip for walking as a result.
