I take direction well! Since we seem to be a group of foodies(at least some of us? any thoughts? Though I don't see why such a topic wouldn't be under Food? Since I'm not working full-time I do not eat out as often here in NYC so I live vicariously on the Food Network! and get some tips, ideas, etc.

Truffaut, it is so much nicer having you re-directing us nicely than having you shut us down like the old days It's so easy to get off-topic, sorry. geordy, although I went to pastry school, I'd much rather cook than bake. I'm curious what others think about the Food Network. I've always thought of the Food Network as entertainment and the PBS cooking shows as educational. I learned most of what I know about cooking from Jacques Pepin and Julia Child on PBS although I love the way Ina Garten, on the Food Network, cooks. Simple but elegant.

Happy, Yes I got hooked on cooking shows from PBS...didn't really see Julia the first time around(too young ) but loved Pierre and others years ago! Still watch PBS and now that I have access Food Network, like some more than others. "Semi Homemade" doesn't do it for me.

I've never spent enough time on the Food Network to get hooked (consciously avoided, I'd never do anything else . . . . ) But, that said, I used to sometimes see the original Iron Chef, which cracked me up. And although I don't recall much about the old Julia shows (saw a few - yes, I'm definitely old enough ), I do remember that Graham Kerr had a show on PBS (whatever it was called back then) when I was quite young. I was quite amused (in a naughty way, of course - we're talking adolescent sense of humor) when he did a show while wearing a pith helmet, and said that it was because, after the show, he was going to "pith off into the jungle." ;D

geordy...it is so funny that you said you don't care for Semi Homemade. On my previous post, I had written a last sentence that said, "Sandra Lee drives me to distraction" and then deleted it as I had already trashed Bourdain and was afraid people would think I hated EVERYONE. She makes me channel-changing crazy! And, Becky, I haven't thought the Galloping Gourmet in years! He always came charging out from the back when they introduced him. He made the MOST rich, butter-laden food until he had a heart attack and then started making everything heart-healthier.

I have to say I do enjoy watching Food Network. We rarely eat out, so I am always trying new things and different ways of approaching the meal. My kids will try anything, so I've been able to go beyond my small town through the Network. Their recipes online are great. I enjoy Giada DeLaurentis and her recipes. I don't have as much time to cook as I would like, so I need recipes that I can do quickly. I don't really like Rachael Ray's show, but her recipes are quick and tasty, nothing gourmet, but at least they use fresh ingredients. I don't like Sandra Lee either. Too much packaged food and nothing seems appealing to me! I don't need haute cuisine, just good healthy food that taste good.

Happygoin, I've got to go back and see where you trashed Anthony Bourdain! I just think he is the coolest thing, strutting around in his boots and leather jacket and awesome hair! What am I missing?!

I'm definitely a foodie, Geordy, and will jump on any food discussion. I dearly love my Bon Appetit's, and have every copy since 1989!
I forgot all about the Galloping Gourmet! That was one of those shows that I would watch when I was home sick from school.

I watched Galloping Gourmet too! I liked the way he said to chop onions and garlic with one hand so as not to "contaminate" the hand holding the wineglass!
I like Lydia on PBS and have been to Felidia and Becco a few times. Met her at Felidia one night while waiting for our table by the bar. Seemed genuinely warm.
Yeah as I said GM, I find something appealing about Boudain to..for a super skinny, chain smoking, ex-drug abuser,,,there is something there! I've only read Kitchen Confidential and Cook's Tour (the first one) but enjoyed them!

I could NEVER be in the same kitchen with Rachel Ray!!! A knife would end up somewhere it shouldn't be.....
Who's this: ""Mmm, mmm, mmm! Wow! That's the best hard-boiled egg I've EVER tasted! The yellow was SOOO creamy and the white was SOOO jiggly!!! And it only cost 75 cents. I'm stuffed! And I've still got $39.25 left to pig out in the capital of fine dining--Duluth! Yippeee! I can hardly wait!!! I'm so excited that if I'd had enough money to buy coffee with my egg, I'd probably be wetting myself right now!!!!!"

Anthony Bourdain came and spoke at our Town Hall lecture series. Unfortunately, my 9 yr old was sick and I couldn't go. My husband and parents went (season tickets) and said he was very entertaining. He detests Rachael Ray! Thinks she cooks slop basically. I can't remember the details of his lecture, but they all seemed to enjoy his sarcastic sense of humor.
I've never seen RR's travel series. Her over enthusiasm would drive me crazy. Her stuff is easy to cook though. I know so many people who don't cook for the families. I would rather see people cook her stuff than feed their kids take-out every night!

As to the Sandra Lee...I'd been "doctoring up" food for years, don't need someone to tell me how....esp. now ! The Rachel $40.00 a day shows were a bit much(the ones she did in Europe are now very sad "I've got $40.00, thats about 50 Euros!" Ah..the good old days for we Americans!!) To make the budget she's go to some fancy place with a view and order just dessert, or order just a starter with "a big ole glass of water with lemon" I doubt that goes over too big without a camera crew! Or order a pasta dish in the Southwest or Netherlands..when I travel somewhere I generally want local specialties!

OMG, Rachel Ray is so awful!!!! Really, that mmmmmmmmm sound that she makes is so annoying!! I can't stand to see her smiling face on box after box of Tricuits in the grocery store either. So I have no idea if her recipes are any good because I can't stand to listen to her for more than a second!!! How did she ever become famous??!!
Anthony Bourdain is entertaining, but I think he's pompous and full of himself. I liked his fiction book and parts of Kitchen Confidential...I agree with him on some subjects but he's just so cocky that it's hard to get past his ego sometimes, even though I do agree that there's something about that bad boy thing...
I have to say that my favorite was and still is Julia Child. She was my cooking hero ;D I miss her.

I go back and forth between HGTV and the Food Network. I LOVED Ina Garten's special done in Paris and then replicating the food in the US. The chicken she did looked fabulous as did the various tartines that she made. It was so fun to see her at the various markets in Paris and sitting at cafes that we've either walked by or sat in.
Likewise, Paula Deen and her husband went to Paris. I spent most of my time laughing at her reactions and comments about the food she was eating. She and her husband bought 6 pastries at their first patisserie and sat and ate them all!!!! She also swooned over bread with bacon in it. If you think you have to be terribly "proper" in Paris, watch Paul's London & Paris Vacation if and when it comes on again!!! You'll see a totally different take!!

I laughed so hard at that Paula Deen in Paris show!! I like her because she reminds me of my aunt, but if I actually saw somebody behaving like that in Paris, I'd run for the nearest exit

Wasn't she just a hoot?!?!?!? However, I LOVED seeing the markets and patisseries and chocolat boutiques and the Eiffel and everywhere she went. What do you think dinner for five atop the Four Seasons cost?!?!

Don't you remember the way Julia used to go at a whole chicken with that giant cleaver. She was more a man than Bourdain will ever be!

I'm all for the Barefoot Contessa. She is delightful her cooking is easy and much of it is French based. She does own an apt. in Paris. Ina Garten is the Barefoot Contessa. Paula Deen is way to overbearing for me and if you eat like she does you'll soon weigh ~600lbs! Ina Garten has some beautiful cookbooks also. S
