I was not familar with this until we booked our hotel here. It is in the corner of the 9th bordering the 2nd and 10th. Kind of a little L shaped private street filled with 2 and 3 star hotels. The main entrance is an arch on Rue Montmartre(across the street from Chartier) and the other is on Rue Bergere. The hotels look a bit past their prime but the buildings are wonderful to look at, great entrance ways and some of the lobbies, though they may have vending machines, have soaring ceilings and lots of plants and are rather ornate! I'd like to know more of the history of the place..I was going to ask the manager of our hotel but didn't get the opportunity.
We stayed at the Emeraude Espagne, on the bottom of the L. Not cushy but adequate(esp. since we got the upgrade as noted in my trip report) English speaking, friendly, clean, and an interesting location to experience not picture book but everyday Paris.
The hotel has an odd layout so the rooms vary greatly. We started with 202..double bed with small bathroom with small shower stall and were moved to a quadruple, #101 with "matrimonial" bed(2 twins sheeted together) and pull out couch(which we of course just used as a couch!) and a large bathroom with tub. I saw on a different forum that #201, right above us(?) is a horror ,tiny with the only window looking out on a shaft(that was our bathroom window, the main room window looked out to the bottom part of the L street.
Grand Blvd. area means lots of cafes, brasseries, chains, stores, etc. Movies, Musee Grevin(wax museum) close to the Opera and Department Stores. I liked that there were 3 grocery stores, a Franprix, Ed, and ShopI literally within a block or so of the hotels! Also a small grocery a few doors down.
Having been to Paris many times I was looking to stay in a different area and this fit the bill. I probably would not recommend to a first time visitor though. The Manager said they get a lot of repeat business, mostly Europeans though I heard some Americans .
At any rate if you are in the area, and you should be..it is also around the corner from some of the Passages...you should walk through and experience the concept!
