This question may seem a little "pedestrian"

...but here goes...

In my French class, we were taught to say "Je vais faire une promenade" if we wanted to say "I'm going for a walk".
But in my Pimsleur CD's, they say" Je vais faire un tour".
I know that both are correct (at least I think so!)...but which is more commonly used?

Also un tour means that the walk will be rather short .
