This website is very good for learning how French words should be pronounced. You simply choose voice and language, then write the word or the phrase in the blank field and click on "SPEAK" ! Thanks to demarais (in another thread), who found it again ! It has been posted several times on TA, but not in this forum before, AFAIK: www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.phpAnd as demarais recommends, try using use both Juliette and Alain's voices to catch the possible nuances.

I second Ian's recommendation - it's a really fun read ;D, plus it has some practical advice that could be quite useful.

Speaking of interesting books about French lifestyle and language, I enjoyed reading French or Foe? and Savoir Flair! both by Polly Platt. They had a lot of advice for business travelers, but I found them enjoyable and I gathered some advice about interactions.

Darn, Talk to the Snail doesn't seem to be in paperback in the US yet--has anyone else found it? I really don't like lugging hardcovers around on vacation!

One of the best books I've read on French culture and history is Sixty Million Frenchman Can't Be Wrong, by 2 French Canadian jouranlists, Barlow and Nadeau. Not a "mannes" book but it does a great job of explaining the French mindset.
They explain how France is not like it used to be, because France has never been like it used to be, it's a changing landscape and has been since time began.

Annette - don't worry about paperback, I've been getting many hardcover books from Amazon, through links to third party vendors who sell used books. Just check the comments about the condition of the book - I've always found them to be accurate, have not been disappointed in purchases, and have gotten many things at a deep discount before they were issued in paperback.

I'm not worried about the cost, just the extra bulk in my carry-on (I only get 22 lbs). I'm thinking I'll just pop for one off the UK site. Either that, or find something else to read on the plane I hate selecting books...I'm too picky about what I spend my time reading!
