The Assemblée Nationale du Québec started a special commission in order to find out how far our citizens want to make accommodements raisonnables (special provisions) for new immigrants. If you understand French here is a weblink for more information: www.tiny.cc/I9EQQ In the USA, I know that it is also a hot button issue. This week, France decided to introduce DNA testing as a potential basis for excluding prospective immigrants hoping to reunify with family members already living in France. In my opinion that is such a Pandora's box, and coming for the son of a Hungarian immigrant rather difficult to swallow. But it does look like immigrant bashing is an effective vote getter.

How would this proposal deal with adopted children or siblings, spouses, etc. DNA seems like a rather foolish measure of legitimate familial connections which are far more complex.

Of course this DNA testing will be of no use for spouses or adopted children . It is supposed to be used when an immigrant coming from a country where the Etat Civil (birth registry ?) cannot be trusted wants his/her family to join in France . There is a law here called "Regroupement familial" by which a legal immigrant can have his family join him/her after a while in France . Regroupement familial is by far the highest provider of immigrants in France, and it is said by the authorities (but I don't know how much this is true) that many people cheat with this law, like they make kids enter France with forged identity papers .
Luc, I suppose that these consultations going on in Québec are supposed to finally result in new laws ?

Anne, nothing is decided yet. There is even talk of changing the definition of our charter regarding the droits de la personne. I find our governement is not going about it in the good way; first they should define our common values and what we find important and after that welcome immigrants in.
For example right now some immigrants come to Canada, decide to live in Québec and are shock that they are force to educate their children in French.
In France, I am sure that there is some abuse with the regroupement familial, especially in polygamist families, but view from aboard the DNA testing seems extreme even if it turn out to be the only good solution.
