I'll be in Paris for this..it is usually the week end after I leave.
Any suggestions? Best places to go, times etc. from those in the know?

Gitte, Thanks for the links though so far they are for last year. As for steering the metro for the good of Paris's infrastructure and my own , I think I'll skip that! And I'm sure that is a LONG line. I've heard the lines can be VERY long! As for pics, nope...the last time I took pictures, other than for work, was my 5th grade class trip to the Central Park Zoo and the Circle Line boat trip! Never even owned a camera..5th grade was Dad's! Various TA posts on the subject in the past. Has your hand ever actually touched a Rick Steves book?? I have one. a gift. I don't find him as bad as some seem too but not a fan either. And paperback..better than getting hit with the Michelin Red! Originally had planned to try a daytrip out of Paris on one of the weekend days..now I guess not? Oh..and as a "lucky potato" I'll try not to get fried, baked or boiled..not so easy around here these days...hotter than Hades..though a bit of a break today!

OK. We will also be in Paris those days although the 16th we have opera tickets in the afternoon. But the 15th would work. EXCEPT, dumb as I am, what is this? My French is very poor and goes back over 50 years to high school. So I have tried reading the links Gitte provided but get about one word in ten. Please someone explain this to me. Is it a time when ordinary people can get into certain venues normally closed to the public? Think I understand the medieval market fair in the Marais but not sure where in the Marais. Thanks.

This sounds like a really cool event! Wish I would be there that time of year to take advantage of some of the behind the scenes tours. Does anyone know if it's always the same weekend each year?

Thank you, Gitte. I would love to see some of the places on the list from last year--Hôtel de Ville, Luxembourg greenhouses, etc. Maybe one of these years we'll get there in Sept.

Gitte, do you sprechen sie Deutsches, too?!! I had to open up the language translator again for that site! Actually, just to FIND the German link! I expected to see "Deutschland" in one variation or another, and had no idea that in French it's something entirely different! (Allemagne) Never would have guessed that one! Anyway, it looks like they have tons of activities going on for their heritage days celebrations--pretty cool!

Once in Paris you can supposedly pick up a schedule at some of the sites including the Hotel de Ville. I imagine current websites should be up soon....guess everyones en vacances!! Also read some stuff about concerts and such..should be fun!

Gitte--I think it's great that so many European countries require several languages in school (and at an early age at that!). The US could take a lesson

Geordy...you can also get into Musee des arts forains at Bercy Village. Since it is a private museum and hard to access, this would be the perfect weekend to visit it.

You should be able to visit the Palais de l'Elysée (presidential palace) too, unless our new president has decided that he didn't want that anymore ... I saw a subject on the TV news one or two years ago where visitors were even greeted and shown in by Mr and Mrs Chirac (well, at least for as long as the TV cameras were filming )
