A. Simon, located at the foot of rue de Montmartre just above the intersection with rue Etienne Marcel, has an outstanding selection of cooking equipment and table settings of restaurant quality. Remember, "restaurant quality" can mean anything from the corner cafe to a 3-star, so you will find a huge selection of glassware, china, linens, etc. at very good prices. Last week I bought a really good cherry pitter and six steel cooking rings (for making those nicel, perfectly round, towering piles of food on a serving plate).

I couldn't LIVE without my cherry pitter! I bought mine at A Simon too, Truffaut. Love it. I use it every morning that cherries are in season. (I used it this morning!)
A Simon is also where I dashed off to when I realized I couldn't POSSIBLY use the nasty coffee maker in my rented apartment.

I didn't go to Dehillerin this trip, as I just couldn't face the exchange rate when looking for copperware. That's why I settled for a 7 euro cherry pitter and the rings. Now, I'm thinking about how to make a "deconstructed" clafoutis using the rings to form piles of marinated cherries and custard cups for the batter portion. And then maybe some creme anglaise flavored with almond instead of vanilla to finish it off.

Thanks, Truffaut and Happy - tourists cooks know about Dehilleren (once went there and got a small oval copper skillet, which I still use regularly, when the flat I rented had no skillet of any kind), but, I had never heard of A Simon before -- definitely goes on my list!

Truffaut....gild the lily and throw some toasted roughly chopped almonds over the whole thing. You'll have all of Paris at your knees...
