The "Fête de la Musique" will be celebrated in France on Thursday, the 21st of June - Summer solstice night - like every year . Have any of you ever been in France on this particular night ? Or has this celebration now been "exported" to your own country ? (I heard that several other countries are now having the same ...) .
Anyway, in France this means that every town is having unprofessional music bands all over its streets, from kids' rock bands to choirs, folk music, classical chamber music, you name it all . There are also some official concerts with profs bands of all kinds organized in the biggest towns . And the great thing is that you just have the feeling that all the population is walking leisurely down the streets, stopping to listen to the bands and sometimes dancing too . When the weather is great, even though it is even more crowded, you just feel as if you were on vacations in your familiar town ... I am looking forward to Thursday night .

It sounds lovely, anne. So you've just given me another reason to wish I were in Paris now.

Anne, we have the same thing here in Washington, DC. I think there are maybe 75-80 groups involved. Much of the program is at the Ambassade de la France.

I have not seen this in other cities, but was at a concert at Ste Chapelle on summer solstice in June 2004 -- one of my favorite memories of Paris!

We were in Bordeaux on the 21st and the FdlM was huge. It happened to coincide with the Bordeaux fête le Vin so for us it was a real feast of music, wine and great food. The fête le Vin is held every other year so we really lucked out. It's also a rare opportunity to sample the wines from the many small independent vineyards that aren't widely distributed or available outside of select restaurants. The 8€ purchase of a tasting glass was the best money I've spent in years.

OMG metromole - food, music and bordeaux wine - could life get any better than THAT??!! So the fête le vin won't be held next year, is that correct? Figures - I'm thinking of a June 08 Paris trip and that sounds like the perfect combination!!

I was in Paris the 21st of June, 1989. I was 23 years old then and I was travelling with a girl-frien through Europe. We were staying at a youth hostel (Le D´Artagnan) where we met some people from different countries and we went to cellebrate toghether. We went to the Tulleries Garden where there were several stages and bands playing. It was a great experience. The only bad thing was that at a certain hour the public transportation stopped, and it was really cold that night. We had to wait at a Mc Donalds until 5.30 am when metro started running again. That same year was the Eiffel Tower 100 years cellebration, and I missed it!!! I arrived in Paris one day after that and then I knew it had taken place the night before. There was no internet those days to know about these things.
