The places we had reservations.
Restaurant du Palais Royale Pre-B'day lunch
Setting should be wonderful but since the seemingly constant construction at the Palais Royale..and inside the restaurant itself..was present...not as much. But weather was glorious and they did have 2 rows of tables outside under large striped awning so it was pleasant if not idyllic! Again because buildings are so old..a good thing!..but ladies W/C is up a stone spiral staircase..kind of in middle..no landing..so if its occupied, it was, you stand on stairs as staff rushes up and down!
Service not so great at first...kind of indifferent and slow for not that many tables...unlike many restaurants, including Grand Vefour also at Palais Royale where we lunched last September, they do not have a prix fixte dejeuner menu. Ordered Chapagne(pre B'day lunch!) Little squash soup w pepper for amuse bouche. Long haired secondary waiter an improvement over host and main waiter. Then sautéed fois gras..perfectly cooked..divine..decorative fig on side and also a kind of fig brittle and puree. Then breast and leg of Mallard with beets and hibiscus reduction..also perfectly cooked and delicious. Some confusion at dessert(head guy took order tried to bring me chamomile tea instead of I caramel mousee I ordered! Mousee covered in something red(?), served with sorbet and brittles..tasty.
On to mignonettes(nougats and coconut macaroons(not macarons!) and café. Heard afterwards they had newish chef who had upped the food quality..indeed!
Dessirier Michel Rostang Seafood bistro in 17th B'day lunch
Service perfect. Set lunch menu @ 40 something Euros. Cahmpagne,,rose this time. Amuse bouche crabe veloute..OMG..could have a bowl and call it done!
But then oysters, served correctly with butter and brown bread and perfect. Plat du Jour was a whiting with coco beans..love my beans!, and citrus sauce..also delicious. Grand Marnier soufflé...aahhh....but didn't pour GM into top of soufflé..still yummy but I kind of like that bottle! Fume blanc with meal..mignonettes, canelles, little fruit tarts...
Le Cochon a la Oreille Rue Montmartre 1st Post B'day lunch
Cute little old place with beautiful tiled interior and great old bar and a stairway to nowhere! Quite a character of middle aged waitress who handled Sat lunch crowd of tourists and friends and regulars with great aplomb! Food comes up on dumb waiter visible at side of bar. Started with Fois Gras Pate, large portion, smooth as silk, toasts. Then special grilled veal with mushrooms and light as air fluffy fromage raviolis! Gamay. Considering name..not much pork on menu!
Delightful lunch..no room for dessert though they looked tasty!
Metropolitan..Diner Monday 2nd nite in Paris and in our 'Hood..Marais 4th
Had read about this place when it opened a few years ago..been meaning to try..glad we did..charming young couple..he cooking ,she serving. Small and cute..old wooden desk and bench like furnishings, clocks, quirky. Good set menu choices..started with creamy moules soup with radishes, other crunchy stuff, peppercorns, sublime! Then volaille supreme avec fois gras beurre, champignon fricassee et pomme de terre puree....I could eat the words...A lovely Beaujolais to wash it all down beautifully and then a chocolat, salt caramel torte... I recommended it to couple from Toronto next to us...another from LA across from them..we were the English speaking corner..rest of place French...Man from LA was on video crew filming Beyoncé/Jay Z concert for HBO..had to ask about rumours..said they don't get too close but whenever he saw the two getting together(apparently not together all the time) it was like two countries meeting with all their entourage leading the procession! Very nice evening ending with stroll thru Pl de Vosges!
Now having written all that I'm going to head to Eric Kayser for a croissant, ficelle, and pastry treat for later!
