We returned recently from a month in New York City where, by happenstance, we discovered the best croissant aux amandes we have had anywhere. While walking to Weight Watchers--so my lifetime-member wife could do her monthly weigh-in--on West 23rd Street we discovered, between Seventh and Sixth Avenues, La Maison du Macaron under (what else?) a construction scaffolding. Madame's croissant aux amandes is the richest, most carmelized, least doughy, most almond-paste filled delicacy in the world. We came back a second and a third time to sit in the small table area to partake. It was far superior to what Maison Kayser (in the Flatiron District) or any Parisian boulangerie we have bought from offers. I welcome comments from the NYC contributors.
BTW, the shop also offers about 30 kinds of macarons, for those interested.
Addendum: Yes, our first visit there was AFTER she had weighed-in at WW.

OMG! I simply adore almond croissants. The same goes for macarons. Yummy!

Shoesy, maybe after our lunch we can walk over and buy some to take home. La Maison du Macaron has two sizes of croissants aux amandes. We didn't try the "mini." The full size one has very thin "tails" at either end, sort of like a fish's tail, and each time we were there those thin parts were baked to the point of near-carmelization. We were always there in the morning, so I am not sure how long they are available. By mid-afternoon, when we stopped in a FOURTH time, this time just for macarons to take out, they were sold out of about 2/3 the macaron flavors. Don't let this discourage you from trying.

Buying macarons is always a great idea, Holger. It's a deal!

It might be better to stop on the way to lunch as I do want Croissants to take home as well as other pastries. In Paris I found that earlier did mean more selections and choices.

Holger - Perhaps you and I could meet at Penn Station, and from there we could go downtown together.

Sounds like a plan. We can check schedules and find a place to meet. Looking forward to it.

Holger - I plan to be in Manhattan early in the morning, so I will gladly walk over to Penn. Station to meet you at the time of your arrival. Perhaps we could meet at the entrance of Hotel Pennsylvania, which is across the street from the station.

That sounds fine. Will check train schedules this weekend and once we know what time we should be at the restaurant actually ticket. The time will need to be whatever works for Geordy as she has to return to work.
