You would think choosing an apartment would get easier but it seems there are more choices now than ever before! I have allocated 9 nights for Paris next January for another solo trip. I have a booking at one of the Paris Bestlodge apartments but it's costing me €1100. Since I made the booking, I've planned another trip before Jan and I am looking to save some money. I don't mind stairs but I do want something with as much natural light as possible given the time of year. I have found www.vrbo.com/409586# which is renting at a bargain rate of €300 per week but it's a tiny 14msq. I might go stir crazy. There's also www.vrbo.com/439068# which is a larger 30msq and is around €500 for a week. I do need to get a quote to factor in the other 2 nights, so the price will be a bit more than above. So, want do you think? Should I go for teeny-tiny or double the amount I spend and choose the larger space?

Both places are cute and seem very light. I know I'd go crazy in the 14 square meter place if I were sharing it with someone, but being there by myself...I don't know, it might feel cozy and comforting. Or it might drive me nuts after a few days, who knows! Will bad weather keep you inside much, or do you get out and about in the rain as if it were nothing? I really do like #2 and that would be my first pick if I weren't trying to save a little extra.

I don't plan to spend much time in the apartment, but you never know with the weather. And last time I was in Paris when there was poor weather, there was nothing better than a hot bowl of food, my warm pyjamas and bed. :-)

I would measure a 14 sq. meter spot in my house and see whether I think it's big enough to live for a week. It's definitely not big enough for 2 people - but for a single it might be fine.
Then I'd take the difference in price of the 2 apartments and splurge on something. The soldes are on in January!

Have you looked at Olivier's other apartments mez? Hubby and I stayed in the one just off rue Amelot for 11 nights. It's a modern building but the studio is very light and airy. It's 380 euros in January. www.vrbo.com/346791 We've also stayed in this one on rue Oberkampf in January at 350 euros a week www.vrbo.com/351177Personally I think 14sq m is tooo small even for a single.

The two that Redqueen suggests are almost as nice as the 2nd one you had on your list and are less costly. The one in the Marais has elevators which also appeals and has lots of light. All three of these are less than the one at Paris Bestlodge. The one at 14msq would drive me nuts even if not in it much.

Yes, I know 14sqm is too small but the price was so attractive I was trying to convince myself. Thanks, redqueen. Those apartments look good and the price is amazing. I will definitely choose from one of these and continue the tradition of staying on the Right Bank. LOL. Yes, Janet, I did notice the timing of my visit. Always happy to snap up a bargain. Although, I will be in NYC before Paris, so hopefully you and Geordy will be around for a winter get-together. :-) Edited to add: Have booked www.vrbo.com/346791 as I will have some luggage with the me and the elevator is a bonus.

I'm glad you booked that one mez. It's a good size and there is space for your luggage as well. There's also a carrefour just round the corner and it's in walking distance of the Marais, and rue de Bretagne with it's food shops. We loved it there.

Hi Mez - I stayed in VRBO 346791 a couple of years ago - it is good sized, the bathroom was very nice and the studio was more than adequate size for one person - liked the location as well and I think you'll be happy there. The one thing I didn't like was the hard, hard bed but that's just me - I have a difficult time finding a bed that suits me when I travel.

That tiny 14m apt near Voltaire is hugely popular and gets good reviews. I've had it bookmarked for ages, in case I needed to pop off to Paris on the cheap. I have wondered if I'd be bumping into myself in it though.
I love Paris in January, Mez. The apartment you ended up with looks nice!

Sandy, I wonder if Olivier has changed the mattress since you stayed there. I don't like a hard mattress either, but I found the bed very comfortable when staying there last July.

Hmmmmmmm - maybe he did change the mattress - I did let him know just how uncomfortable it was so hopefully he made a change because I would stay there again if the mattress was a bit softer than when I was there!

I don't mind a firm mattress at all, it's pillows I have troubles with. I love my pillow at home (high and very firm) and you never get anything like this when travelling. Pillows are either flat as pancakes or very high until your head sinks into them and you nearly suffocate.
Geordy, NYC dates are Jan 10 to 16. The date is perfect as I am there just in time to catch the Vermeer exhibit at the Frick before it closes.

Oooh - I didn't know the Frick was having a Vermeer exhibit. Now 2 reasons to go to NYC in January! The Mauritshuis in The Hague is closed until mid-2014 and the collection is touring the world. I do like it when museums do that.
