Planning on starting September trip there...thoughts on traveling there via public transport? Flying into Marseilles or Nice?
Has anyone stayed there w/o a car?

Geordy, Did you fly into Marseilles or Nice? I've just started researching for our trip next year at around the same time. We're planning to go to Provence and Nice. At first, we were going to fly into Paris and take the TGV down, but my husband suggested we fly into Marseilles so as not to spend time in Paris. He thought we should spend the whole time in Provence, but now, we're thinking of flying into and out of Nice because we'd also like to spend a few days there. The plan is to base in Aix for 5 days, taking day trips by bus, train, and a guided tour to Cassis. We may rent a car one day to get to St. Remy and maybe Les Baux. One day, we'll take the bus to Arles, and another, the train to Avignon. One half day we want to go to Marseilles in the morning and go to a restaurant there -- I think it's FonFon -- for bouillabaisse. I had to convince my husband ;-) He has no desire to go to Marseilles, but it seems so easy to get there, and I'm told that's the only place to get really good bouillabaisse. Does that seem too much for 8 days...5 in Aix and 3 in Nice? I ask because I always tend to over-plan.

SG, We flew to Paris, connecting to Marseilles on A/F. Also thought about flying to Nice because it was direct but the train to Arles , distance , time, and other wise was best to Arles..our first stop..from Marseilles. There is now a train station(sort of!) at Marseilles airport so no need to head into City to train station. Don't remember what mu trip report about that is called?
I'm with Janet, esp. if you don't have/do direct flights to and from Nice...take TGV to Paris..spend a night or two and then fly home!

Geordy, We'll be flying to Nice even though it's takes longer to get to Aix than flying to Marseille would, and we plan to spend the last 3 days there. Have never been to Nice or Marseille. We plan to take a day trip to Marseille by bus, a day trip to Saint Remy by car, and a day trip to Arles and Avignon by train. Going by TGV from Paris is tempting, but we will see more of Provence, and then Nice, this way. A lot to squeeze into 8 days!

This trip keeps evolving...all the flights that go to Marseille or Nice seem to leave Chicago in the morning, which means we would have to spend the night before we leave in a hotel, which we'd rather not do. Just added expense! Now, we're thinking again about going to Paris and taking TGV down to Aix. My idea is to go to Paris, spend one night in Paris, and take the TGV to Aix the next morning. My reasoning is that we'll be refreshed and ready to enjoy Provence, but my husband says it would be "wasted time." I told him that time in Paris is "never wasted!" :-) We still want to go to Nice, so it might be a day trip. Planning a trip just to Paris is so much easier!

Flights to France, and Europe in general, leave NYC late afternoon/night so can't really help there. Totally agree time in Paris is never wasted! But , could you just connect to a flight to Marseilles the same day? Or Nice..or a TGV from CDG? I know its frustrating but keep plugging away..the end result will be worth It!
