Today's Paris Breakfasts newsletter featured Le Select, especially in regards to Rick Tulka and his drawings of the cafe. Rick Tulka and Noel Riley Fitch wrote the book, Paris Cafe: The Select Crowd, which is now on Kindle. I have the book, and I love the drawings! I also like the cafe itself very much. We've been there a couple of times, and both times we had the same waiter. The first time he seemed a little aloof, which didn't surprise me. What did was how nice the same waiter was to our 6 year old granddaughter on our next visit to the cafe. He took our order -- my husband's and mine -- and we were about to order for her when our waiter turned to her and asked very gently, "Et pour vous, Mademoiselle?" She was so pleased that he asked her directly, and not us, that she gave a very polite answer in French, ending with "s'il vous plait. I was proud of her :-) tinyurl.com/bf7a2xwtinyurl.com/bd7f6j6Le Select 99 Bd Montparnasse 75006 Tel: 0145483824 Sandy

I also wanted to mention that Le Select is in a very easy location to reach, since it's steps away from the Vavin Metro on Boulevard du Montparnasse. We took the #4 Metro from Saint Germain des Pres, and after breakfast, we hopped back on the #4 Metro in the other direction, getting off at the Cité stop so we could walk over to Notre Dame. Easy....

I like his book too - a couple of years ago, I purposely went to Le Select to see if I would see Rick Tolka there - so happy to see him sitting there drawing and somehow I found the nerve to go and talk to him - Carol at PB warned not to do that but I did it and was pleasantly surprised at his response - he was very gracious and we had a nice chat - he also autographed one of big Le Select cards for me which I framed when I got back home - I asked him where I could buy his book and he suggested that I wait until I got home as it would be much cheaper here! Now, I hope to take the book back with me and get his autograph - if I have the nerve to do that again that is!! Certainly don't want to hound him!

Hi Sandy, It's hard to know whether to approach someone or not. Good for you for having the nerve to do it! Sounds like you got a very good response and some happy memories :-)
