I saw that too Jo (glad they covered the Paris book in the 2nd half of the interview...the first part was last week when all our NYC programming was Sandy coverage) Do read the book.....I devoured it and know several other OPFers have read and enjoyed. And I totally agree with his assessment of education here these days! I work with a number of bright, college educated 20 and 30 somethings and their knowledge, or lack of, of US history and geography(among other subjects) let alone the rest of the planet! is alarming......but boy can they text! And figure out all that tech stuff.... And sadly the lovely bar with the stunning view of the Brooklyn Bridge where part of the interview was conducted is closed until further notice. Sandy did quite a job on the River Cafe.......

I loved the book too. So true about the sad state of education in our country.

Watching that video made me realise that we here in England are becoming just as ignorant of our own, and world, history. I have long criticized our teachers for not teaching the basics, and history is an essential.

I thought it was a wonderful book. There was so many things that struck me, the American Ambassador who remained in Paris during the Franco-Prussian War, the number of creative people who just upped themselves and moved from America. The other thing is that I complain about the length of an 8 hour trip from Toronto, and these people were on small ships in horrendous weather for about 1 month. Cheers Dan
