It is just a dreadful situation here in the NY/NJ/Conn tri state area. So many w/o power, homes destroyed, people killed by falling trees and other accidents, hospital evacuations, just devastating.
I am in one of the fortunate areas, very little effect....I've got everything working.
Except me....no mass transit and office is in an evacuation/no power zone...don't know what tomorrow brings.
But watching the coverage is heartbreaking......
I know some of you have family and/or friends in the area..if you can't reach them bear in mind massive power outages and cell service is out or sporadic for many. My laptop has crashed a few times.

So sorry for all those affected, your President has called it a major disaster. It will take some time for the city to recover, my thoughts and best wishes go to all of you.

I just got back from New York last Tuesday. It is terrible to think of what has been happening there the past 24 hours. Hope everything is back up and running soon and that none of our opf friends and families have been very badly affected.

Glad to report that my parents have gotten the clearance to return home. They've been told a piece of siding from the house is missing - if that's the worst impact they are extremely fortunate. The storm came ashore about 20 miles north of where they live. The towns just north of that point got much more severe impact.
NYC really got hit hard. Glad to hear that Geordy is faring well. Hope Shoesy's family gets power back soon.
Ironically, the eye of the storm passed over my sister's house and they never lost power. Friends and family hundreds of miles away are still without power.
This was a major storm. Hope everyone else in the OPF community is faring well.

My niece lives in NYC and she called this morning. She said things are pretty crazy. She feels lucky because she usually travels by bicycle, so she's less effected by the lack of subway.
She has no power but said it was a nice to walk around the neighborhood this morning and talk with neighbors.
I watched the national news, and Ihave to say that this story made me cry: The NYC Medical Center lost power. Then the generators failed. The neo-natal nurses each took a baby from its incubator and walked it down 9 flights of stairs, with only flashlights, giving the babies oxygen all the way. Now that's heroic.
Stay safe everyone!

Yes that story kept me up after midnite....I had heard a lot of ambulances going by...my block goes East towardand south many blocks.where NYU is and then saw the report with 50-75 ambulances lined up in addition to the infants another 180 or so patients on respirators or other electrical devices were transported. And so far all okay.
Tomorrow I try to take a bus to my office....and if I get there it probably won't be open as it is on 17th and 10th.right next to West side Hywy..which is closed.... and there is no power in area as of now.but boss said try and I will and hold it over his head for ever more!!!!

Thanks Ahhh..
So much for my adventure woke up to a VM that boss finally got more info on office bldg....bottom flrs flooded..no power and security would turn us away...and the news that 1st two days most likely covered but may have to start using leave.....So no trying the free limited bus mobs to get there.
My two sibs in NJ have no power and bro has roof damage
Sis and niece in VA both have flooding in yards and crawl spaces and porches but didn't lose power.
NYC niece who lives near Battery flood zone evacuated to new beau's place upstate with her large Scottish Deerhound..and then his [place promptly lost power!

Thanks for the update, Geordy.
I must ask, what was your boss smoking? With all the pressure on the few services available, surely it makes sense for any non-urgent travel not to take place.

Maybe truth serum....knowing how our company and the gov works and what our reactions would be.....informed we have to use leave time for yesterday and today..even though we have been told not to report..not allowed in bldg! Many of the folks I work with are in areas w/o power, have had damage and this is adding insult to injury...

Some things are getting better......but so many effected areas....patience is running out and anger/frustration setting in..and a lot of mixed opinions about the NYC Marathon going forward on Sunday. Too few resources needed in too many places. And another Noreaster storm predicted for Wed! More OPF trip reports here please!!!

I just read that the NYC marathon has been postponed which seems like the right decision.
Friends in northern NJ and Pennsylvania are still without power. Spirits remain high but no power for 5 days plus enormous lines at the gas station is getting old.
I am so thankful my parents fared as well as they did. Being just south of the point of landfall vs. just north made a big difference.
Geordy - and anyone else affected by the storm - my thoughts are with you.

At first I had mixed feelings about the Marathon.... all the $$$ coming into the City, all the miles run by the runners in prep......and a personal connection, no not me but my bro ran it over 20 times, as did a niece, her husband, friends and co-workers(but not over 20 times! , I live a block from the route/17 mile mark, had parties/open houses for yrs,....but once it became known that the devastation was much worse and wide spread than predicted ....particularly in Staten Island where the race begins.....the decision to cancel should have been made sooner rather than later.. Hopefully the Marathon resources will all be diverted to where they are needed. A friend in lower Manhattan still has no power though some of that area has been brought back. One sib in NJ has, one doesn't. It truly is a tale of two cities. How is your place upstate Janet? We've been informed that our office bldg will not be open on Mon. They....my company and the Fed gov agency. we work for...had best come up with a way to "use us" before then. It is ridiculous to make us use leave time when we could be sent elsewhere to be of help...not that folks are not doing what they can on their own. Dreaming of Paris.....and hoping for a healthy NY.. More Paris tales please

While we were always extremely lucky and never suffered any significant damage ourselves, I've seen firsthand the cleanup efforts in the aftermath of a couple of decades of hurricanes in Florida, and that didn't include any threat of hypothermia.
While there's an argument for not letting this defeat the spirit of the city -- the reality is the city's first responsibility is to her people -- and there are enough of the city's people who have no power, water, heat, or even food and water that taking even a single person off the job of getting people's lives back in order is irresponsible and insensitive.
Postponing the marathon was the correct, and only, choice.
