How frustrating! I just got an email from the hotel advising me of renovations at the hotel during my stay. I don't want to stay there now as part of the reason for choosing the hotel was a view and the overall ambience - scaffolding doesn't do it for me. So here I am back on the lookout for another hotel. Email excerpt: We would like to inform you that the decision concerning the renovation of the front street side of the hotel has just been made. The works will be held from August 28th 2012 to November 30th 2012. A security scaffolding will be installed at the entire height of the building, where maintenance staff will be working during the week (except Saturday and Sunday) from 9:00am to 5:00pm. During these hours the windows musty be closed, the balconies will not be accessible.

Bummer! Its definitely not fun to have to find new accommodations, but I'm glad the let you know what will be going on and it wasn't an unpleasant surprise once you arrived. What about the Regina? I don't know how it compares, but it's in the same general area I think, and has good views. I was by it a few days ago and there's no scaffolding

On a yuckiness scale of 1-10, this is indeed a 12! The working from 9:00 - 5:00 wouldn't bother me because I'm always out of the hotel during those hours, but the scaffolding is not what I call Paris beauty. So sorry, Mez. I hope you find a nice replacement.

In that general area, we have stayed twice at Relais du Louvre. There are views from the rooms facing the street. But we stayed on the courtyard side for quiet and room preference. All the rooms are charming, the staff and service are wonderful and the location great. Those are more important to us than views.
But good luck with finding a satisfactory substitute. Maybe there are some studio apartments with views that you might think about. There are some handled by Perfectly Paris.

Mez, I'm going to throw this out, but know that I'm just repeating what I see on TA. Lots of people who like the Brittainique also recommend the Hotel Brighton. It's very close to the Brittainique and gets great reviews. I have no idea if their rates are comparable. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. Luckily (?) I was away sick today from work due to illness. I managed to spend a couple of hours searching hotels. The good news is there are loads of available hotels. The bad news is there are loads of available hotels - which to choose? LOL. I am not wedded to the area but I did want to stay at this hotel because of the memories - I walked past it one day and for the first time ever, backtracked and went inside to ask for a business card. It's been on my list for several years but because I normally stay at apartments, I have never stayed at the hotel. Anyway, I have decided to stay here: www.lerobinetdor.com/English.phtmlI decided to stay fairly close to Gare du Nord and find a hotel I can walk to from here. In a bizarre twist, this hotel is literally around the corner from the apartment I stayed in last year - in fact, I used to walk past the construction work daily on my way to the metro. Who knew it was destined to be a hotel? ;D
