Despite the fact that it is 50 degrees here in Ohio, I decided to make hot chocolate this evening. (Of course do we really need cold as a reason to enjoy hot chocolate?) I received a hot chocolate pot for Christmas from Williams-Sonoma and I wanted to try it out. Along with the pot I was given a canister of hot chocolate "mix. It was not the Swiss Miss variety of cocoa powder but instead shaved chocolate. I also got a package of heavenly looking marshmallows (haven't tried them yet though!). The hot chocolate was very easy to make and tasted delicious. The girls thought it was like drinking melted chocolate. Although I did not have hot chocolate while in Paris, I think that it may resemble what many have enjoyed. If you are a fan of hot chocolate, I highly recommend trying this gadget out. BTW - was in WS the other day and saw that this is part of their holiday clearance! Also came across this article on hot chocolate. A visit to Angelina's is definately on my to do on next trip list. www.boston.com/travel/articles/2004/04/25/melted_blended_sipped/

RTG - I can't believe I am responding to a food post but your description makes it so wonderful, I will go to Angelina on my next trip. My daughter (the one with 5 week old Lucy) is nuts for hot chocolate. If I tell her I am going to Angelina I will probably have to bring her a lot of hot chocolate stuff.

By the way, if you are ever interested in making your own marshmallows, Ina Garten has a great recipe:

Once you've made them, you'll never go back to store bought again.

rtg...well, thanks. We went to Costco in Rancho Mirage today and since Monterey is the street that leads to El Paseo where WS is, we drove into town and bought that chocolate maker. The chocolate and the marshmallows are also on sale. Will try them all tomorrow!

Greyghost - Hope you enjoy it! There is a recipe for hot chocolate with the maker that sounds good. Barefoot Contessa has one as well in her Family Style cookbook. I noticed mint flavored hot chocolate mix at the store, perhaps with chocolate marshmallows?

rtg...it was sinfully good. I made the recipe in the booklet. And the parts are easy clean too. Yes, I saw the peppermint but passed. Those marshmallows are kind of weird, tho.

Randy - if you go to Angelina's on your next trip, DON'T buy their hot chocolate mix -- it's not what you drink there! I stopped there to buy the mix during the summer of 2006, asked the gals at the register if that was what they made their chocolat chaud with, they said "yes, exactly," and I was so excited! However, when I made it (and used more mix than was instructed), it was very plainly boring milk chocolate and it wasn't even good!!! Think Nestle's Quik! Don't waste your money. Maxim's cocao poudre is the BEST I've purchased.
