Yup! Used to be a seven year term and now its only five, so i really does seem to sneak up on one. I wrote an article about the results with the nationalist party. findingnoon.com/?p=402I feel kind of strongly about it.

Last month I was at a rally for the far left and some young communist groups. Jean-Luc Melenchon spoke to the amazing crowd. Dozens of buses from all over France were parked around the Place Bastille. We found everyone so well behaved and friendly.

Thanks all. Glad you appreciate the piece. Its a very strange time in France, probably all of Europe, with the economic crisis making people look for change that is often the wrong change.

Great article, thanks for sharing. I don't live in France but think that this election is important to all of us and I agree with you, that is some scary stuff. Let's hope that their influence is limited.

Let us face it, the Western world is going through a very bad time, and may emerge as a different place. The financiers have led us all into a bad place, heads should roll, if we have the strength to do it.

You are so right Mossie! The financiers are the ones responsible and I for one would love to see their heads roll! Unfortunately I fear that as always, it will be the little people who suffer. Here's hoping that the people wake up and see what's happening, here and there!

Second round is today, folks. Tonight, France will probably have a new president.

Phread, any idea when the results will be out? I'll be away this afternoon but am fascinated by this and want to check in for the outcome!

The next step is François Hollande taking office on May 15th and naming his preliminary government. Then we have legislative elections in June to give the new president full power or shackle him with a majority in the opposition (very unlikely).
Then we'll get the 'real' set of government ministers and an idea of what awaits us.
Frankly, my own agenda in the meantime is the Cannes film festival and the Eurovision song contest.
