For those of you who rent an appartment in Paris and cook your own meals . You'll find some products in supermarkets, at some butchers' or even sometimes on markets which carry this label : This is a quality label run by the Ministry of Agriculture . It concerns mainly meat (and meat-made products like ham or pâtés), but also free-range eggs, some farmed fish, some fruits or vegetables, some salt, etc ... If you take the example of meat, the animals have to be raised and fed according to strict and detailed specifications (no intensive farming of course), and they usually come from a specific terroir (area) . If the meat is subsequently processed (like for ham), there are rules for the processing too . And then the product is tested and it has to taste better than standard products . Everything is strictly controlled . Of course there are a lot of high quality products which don't have the Label Rouge . Like if the local butcher won't go through the certification process for his own pâtés, of course . Or he can sell some excellent meat without any label . But Label Rouge is always a guarantee of high quality products, which is especially useful to help you make your choice when shopping in a supermarket . There is another label : "AB" (green label) = agriculture biologique= organic . Strictly controlled too .

Thanks Anne, this is very helpful information (especially for the times one is in a supermarket, not at a small shop). I will put this to good use!

I'm glad to know this, Anne. In America we have something called the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. It's a magazine that tests all kinds of products (not food though) and, if the product meets certain high standards, they award it the seal. The Label Rouge sounds like a French version, only for food . Thank you.
