Another overcast, cool, wet day.....trying to go lite at PD as day is centered around lunch res at Un Dimanche a Paris ! First res we made and I made it using The Fork and we are getting complimentary choco kirs!
Walked up Annette's street to the Rue Monge Parapharmacy, picked up a few items then made our way to the Musee Luxembourg for the Cezanne et Paris exhibition. No waiting, not too crowded..sometimes this space can get very mobbed but they seem to have widen up the rooms some. Very nice.
Headed to St Germain area slowly, time to kill before lunch and didn't want to stop for aperitif as we had those Kirs in our future!
Arrive on time for res. Main restaurant area is basically two connecting rooms..front one is full, back one no tables..full of men is suits drinking champagne. They acknowledge our res..."oh oui' and say they will" make a table". Wait..they carry a table from upstairs and put it in the front corner of the room with the men milling about! Ridiculous! We say we don't think that is going to work..he says "Yes, too noisy?" Ya think, plus being crowded by still arriving men..not exactly what we had in mind for the "chocolat" romantic lunch!
He says they will be going to a private room soon but it did not look like it.....wanted us to go at least wait at that table..while offering nothing..why? Because we were standing there looking not too happy?..not like they could accomodate any new customers! And we had no desire to be jostled by the men holding drinks!
So we left very disappointed and annoyed at the unprofessionalism.
Now it is getting later..where to lunch..and get a much now needed drink!!!
Remembered the lovely casual meal we had last Feb at L'Atlas and it was close and though our minds and appetites had been set on a nice leisurely, more gourmet meal...we figured if nothing else we could have oysters and/or other shellfish!
But one of the plats de jour was cous cous , looked good..perfect for the weather so that was the choice! And I got in another fav..merguez! Along with chicken! Nice Bordeaux. a dessert de jour..clafoutis avec cherises and cafe. Nice feel to place..lots of regulars, older folks, old fashioned waiters(mumbling the dsihes to himself as he positions appropriate tableware!)
More waling about and back to hotel at about 4..still cleaning room..but said just a moment..and then took an extra one to go get more rolls of tp and an addition box of tissues..un moment well spent! And room was made up just fine.
So no dinner plans because of the lunch res....decided just to take a chance and walk by Le Bistro de Gastronomes, had wanted to try but their schedule and ours were not meshing, but now? Didn't realize Cardinal Lemon(as I call it) went all the way to the river and we had actually walked by it the second day and didn't notice!
Only two tables occupied when we got there a bit before 9 so we were good. A table of 4 Italian adults and a toddler and an older couple. Started with Champagne. Long wait for starter, no snacks or amuse bouche(so it is not like they thought we would linger with champ and that) which was a seared foie gras . If they had fired it anytime around when we placed our order it would have been a puddle! But it was perfect..nicely seared on the outside..all yummy goodness on the inside. Served atop very thinly sliced potatoes. Side of mache dressed with a tart vinegergrette..I guess to cut through some of the fat if that is important to you ..but just a superb plate!
Then after another wait..I think I recall it is a husband and wife team..and indeed she was the only front room person, very pleasant,..Onglet de Boeuf with fried potatoes and mushrooms..perfectly cooked.. but couldn't finish. Another good Cahors wine.
The first two desserts.."a reconstructed" or something like that apple tarte , and a chocolate one you have to order when ordering meal as they take at least 30 mins. Wisely decided on cheese plate..very nice..and couldn't finish that either
The waits weren't a problem for us but wonder what would happen if the place were packed? Really nice little place but I doubt they get much walk by business on their block..a Mercedes dealership across the street.
So the day ended very well considering it had all been thrown off by D a P! Their loss...I was planning on doing some damage in the shop after lunch..and I did...at different chocolate shops!..not exactly hard to fine in Paris!
