Breakfast was included so we headed to lobby breakfast room...nice room view of street and good spread...bakery quality very good. Problem is one eats too much! Totally self service so you don't have to wait for one harried server to bring your hot beverage! Hotel Modern St. Germain I'll be posting review on Trip Adviser. After we booked, I read 2 on there that said bed bugs! Almost switched but glad didn't, worked out fine! And unfortunately bed bugs are like some other vices..only as clean as the last customer.. But the hotel seems to be renovating little by little. When it is done I expect the prices will rise..great location!
After breakfast we walked over to Right Bank to Hotel de Ville for Doisneau exhibition..thought it might be a nice romantic thing to do...should have paid attention to title of exhibition...Les Halles!
Photos of pedestrians jumping over piles of rotting trash, sides of beef, pigs' heads..not exactly romantique!! But fun show..runs until 4/28. And to my delight the Sempe had been extended...so we did that too...fun watching the price of the New Yorker covers going up over the years! Extended until March 31.
Still stuffed from breakfast so walked about a bit.....finally stopped for lunch back on the left bank at Cafe Le Petite Pont..great views...through the bicycles! Started with Volaille in puff pastry with tomato and mushroom sauce, then raie roulades and smashed potatoes in sorrel sauce..not fine dining but mighty tasty! Cote de Provence.
Weather got nastier after we left Cafe, sleet, so ducked into another one..St Severin and the next thing I know we are sharing chocolat/coconut crepes and coupes de champagne! Then the sun came out for a tiny bit! Back to hotel for early rest period before getting gussied for Opera Garnier!
Oh..if you are going to grocery shop at Monoprix..no more libre sacs plastique after 2/15!!! Bring your own.....
Took Metro to Opera so had that great moment of climbing up the stairs and turning around and there it is in all its glory, glowing against the night sky!
Took a look at the restaurant ..looks like alot of outdoor seating for when the weather is fine! Ballet was Orphee et Eurydice by Pina Bausch..not a favorite choreographer of mine but interesting and the music.. Gluck..was fine! Our box only had 2 other people as it was next to one of the big marble pillars.
Champagne at interval...humming Phantom music! Now I understand all about globalization but seeing Pringles being sold at the Garnier is a bit much, along with wrap sandwiches, M & Ms and brownies! Thank God you still get real Champ in a real glass..courtesy of Charles Heidsieck.
Usual Champ and Oysters around the corner at the Grand Cafe. And a delectable millefeuille with raspberries..and champ rose in honor of the day!
Walking past Breakfast In America on the way to hotel..line out the door on St Valentine's Day night!!!!
