I'm heading to our office in Amsterdam for a few days and will have a free Sunday. Never been there before so I'd like to just explore a bit. I figure I'll go another time for a longer stay - just want to whet my appetite.
I arrive around 7:30 am and the hotel is close to the airport.
I've got a guide book that I'm still reading. I'm thinking of visiting the Anne Frank house and then just walk around and explore - weather permitting.
Any ideas for what else to do in one jet-lagged day are welcome,
Thanks!

Book your Anne Frank tickets online or you spend (waste) a lot of time in line. It is a short walk from the AF hosue to the canals or you can take the trolley a.There are canal cruises leaving from there. Also the Van Gogh and Rijk museums are very close by and

The handbag museum! It's truly amazing and it also has a lovely tea room.
The other museum I would recommend is the Resistance Museum although it's not quite as central as some of the other places.
I went last year as part of my long trip. I hadn't been to Amsterdam in a very long time so it was like I was a newbie all over again.
Have a great trip. I really enjoyed the city.

WATCH OUT FOR BICYCLES!!! Second that ! And the Anne Frank House. I enjoyed the Heineken Experience..its a self guided tour , with some special effects, through the old factory. The actual plant has moved outside of the City(I move I think had just happened around the time of my first visit..couldn't remember why we didn't tour it! but did do the Experience the last time!) Plus with your ticket you get tokens for beers along the way and a free gift! Also went to a lovely Church hidden in the attic of a house,,I'm sure it is in your book. I fell for the automat (I forget the name but they are all over) croquettes! In the food category you might also try a "rice table" at an Indonesian restaurant. And of course a visit to "The Nightwatch" at the Rijk Museum...look closely...is it a murder mystery? ? A J'Accuse? ?

Thanks Ladies. Clearly I need more than a day. Pity that work has to interfere with my sightseeing!

Here's a brief report on my day. I ended up staying at the Victoria Hotel just outside Central Station, which worked perfectly. Based on Jody's advice I bought a ticket to the Anne Frank House online which worked well. Touring the house was both sad and uplifting at the same time. What a great spirit she had. The section at the end that showed her father talking about her was especially moving. Jet lag hit hard in the afternoon so after walking around for awhile I went back to the room for some much-needed sleep. I went out for a dinner in a nice bistro and then found the American football playoffs in an Irish pub. Thanks again for all the advice. I'll definitely go back - one day was not enough. Just took one picture:

One day is better than none.
I am glad you had a good time.
My flight home for my 2012 trip flies out of AMS so I will get a few more days in the city.
