I've never heard this topic brought up on the forums and I think some people may be very interested in this television program. Des Racines et des Ailes is a 1-1/2 hour documentary style program shown on channel 3 (France 3) on Wednesday evenings that covers all aspects of French history, culture and patrimony. It is absolutely outstanding and is the only tv program around which I have ever scheduled my free time. It never disappoints. Each program has an overall theme that is broken into three or four segments/topics. The reporting is excellent, the photography breathtaking and the subject matter always interesting. If you just can't get enough of Paris or all things French I guarantee you'll want to watch this program. The past few weeks they have been covering Paris and I've gotten a look behind the scenes at a lot of things that are off limits to the public, as well as excellent coverage of those things with which you may be familiar but always seen from a different perspective. Last Wednesday had 3 different Parisian themes covering Art Deco Paris, Secret Gardens, La Mouzaïa and an exploration of the Canal Saint-Martin, Bassin de la Villette and Canal de l'Ourcq. The program has a website and you can watch archival footage from all programs from 2007 to the present. Although you can only watch about 12 or so minutes of each program on-line you can purchase DVD's. If you are visiting France and you have a tv in your hotel/apartment it would be worth spending your Wednesday evenings in front of the tv. Here is a link to their website so you can have a look for yourself. Trust me, once you watch a bit of it you'll be hooked. programmes.france3.fr/des-racines-et-des-ailes/index-fr.php?page=archives

It's on Wednesday evenings from 8:35PM to about 10:20PM. It's not always on every Wednesday evening but at least every other week it is shown. I guarantee you'll love it.

I remember when I was in the U.S. we used to watch this on French TV5 and it was often subtitled. I think most cable providers will offer TV5 if you want to check when you go back home. It used to be so comforting to me when I was really "homesick" for France.

I was looking for something to watch tonight and imagine my delight in coming across an episode of Des Racines et Des Ailes on one of the French TV stations here in Canada ~ a wonderful look at the newly renovated Orsay Museum. The newly painted rooms and lighting make the works of art look even more incredible. The reporting is very detailed, with lots of background on the restoration, the architecture, and some new acquisitions (including some stunning new glass benches which have been loaned to the museum by a Japanese artist for the next five years). The show makes me want to revisit D'Orsay as soon as I can (hopefully in May with Sebastian).
I'll be on the lookout for more episodes, that's for sure! Thanks for sharing, FM ~ I wouldn't have known about this show without you.

jo - I'm so glad you were able to get that program. I saw that episode several weeks ago so perhaps overseas they are a few episodes behind what they currently show in France. That was really a great look behind the scenes at the Orsay. The Art Nouveau segment was fantastic as well. I really meant it when I said this was the best show on French TV. It's on again tonight and they'll be covering The Camargue and The Canals of Brittany.
Jody - If you can't get the French channel TV 5 from your cable operator you can order dvd's on line from the official website if that interests you.

Now that I know we can get it, I'll be looking for it every night since I'm not sure what the schedule is. Really informative, entertaining program.
We really enjoyed the segment on the architect that designed so many of the metro entrances. What a shame that most of them were torn down.
Den and I were trying to guess the price of the apartment that lady lives in, which had the last remaining fireplace designed by him, which also had a wrap around balcony overlooking the courtyard. Now that's where I want to live!!

jo- Yeah, it's on Wednesday evenings here but not every Wednesday. Sometimes it can be 2-3 weeks between episodes. As far as the price of that ladies apartment I think there is a saying, "If you have to ask, you can't afford it". Jody - I just wanted to add that if you bought the dvd's you'd need to buy a region free dvd player. Véronique just answered a question about this on Trip Advisor so I'll copy and past so that you and others will have the info: The DVDs are most likely zone 2 only so they won't work on an American DVD player and may not work on all computers either. If you are techno-savvy, unlock your computer or home DVD player, if not you can buy a region free DVD player online (stores cannot legally sell them). That's what I did when I was living in the US. I bought one that had been rated as being easy to unlock (for the technology-challenged like me) and came with the code to unlock it. It was a very easy manipulation. www.world-import.com/dvd.htmtinyurl.com/73goqw8

If the DVD's are Region 2 and you are in Region 1, you can also download this to your computer free of charge: www.videolan.org/vlc/and it will play them. I have used it on my laptop with my Region 2 DVD's for years and they have played perfectly. Also, if you live in the US and have the ability to play Region 2 DVDs, Amazonco.uk is often significantly less expensive for DVDs than Amazon.com, especially in January and July when they have huge sales.

I also really like that program. One of my favorites was about foreigners who love Paris. Great show.
Re - all zone DVD players - I bought one from Amazon for under 100 dollars. It's great because I can now watch whatever movie I want, no matter what zone.
