On previous trips I had never noticed any pompiers, I suppose not being a particular aficionado (Ducks below desk to escape the barrage of viciously swung handbags ;D)
However on this trip I had three encounters, the first when crossing the footbridge over the Bassin de la Villette. Here were 4 men in similar PT kit doing strenuous exercises, including carrying one another down the steps. It was only when I saw "Sapeurs et Pompiers de Paris" emblazoned on their tee shirts that I realised I was in the presence of gods
Later I came upon a similar group in the Buttes Chaumont. However on my last day, after worshipping the goddess in the red dress, that I carried on down to the Canal St Martin and found my way apparently blocked by this mob
There were no barriers so I picked my way across the jumble of fire hoses. Nobody attempted to stop me and there was no apparent Elfin Safety to nanny me. I could see they were setting up for an exercise so walked on and turned to watch. Two men were ascending the 80 foot ladder to practice with their hoses
here is the full effect, note the metro on Line2, crossing the Place de la Bataille de Stalingrad
I had to take another pic from the next bridge
Walking further down the canal found this effective street art
Continuing the street art theme I had previously stumbled upon Peg Leg the Elephant
When on my way to Breakfast in America I walked round Place des Vosges, it being many years since I had been. I found this in a posh gallery window and think some of the street art previously featured, compares very favourably.
When doing my tourist bit I had a ride on the wheel at Concorde and snapped this
Later I went up the Arc de Triomphe for this one
To complete the lights theme, when I returned to my hotel on Sunday evening I found they had even decorated Av Laumiere
All in all I had a most relaxing few days, with some amusing company and tiring walks. Just hoping for many more
