Fantastic! Really beautifully done as usual. And you went at the perfect time with the backdrop of gorgeous fall leaves.

Awesome, Kerouac!!! Darryl and I were just talking about Pierrefonds over dinner tonight...he was asking what daytrips I am planning for our next trip, and Pierrefonds and Compiegne are high on the list. Now I have pictures to show him--thanks!

I too would recommend t! We had a car and managed to get around much better, especially to see the Armistice site.

Alas I will have to wait and try to view the report at work...transferring all those photos was taking far too long and I think if I continued..besides being here all day..it may have been the kiss of death for my last legs lap top!
But what I did see looked gorgeous..it has been on my list since Janet went..that was around the time "Merlin" the mini-series was airing here..I did enjoy it!!
And yes I did check out some sites which were not particularly helpful..how difficult is it to get to w/o a car??
Humm..I woonder if the hotels pictured offer some sort of pick up service....

Geordy--Info I've gotten from Mary (Nutsabouttravel) on getting to Pierrefonds from Compiegne: Blue Bus Ligne LR27 @ 11:30-11:54 (2nd stop in Pierrefonds: Maison de la Presse); Return on same bus line, 17:38-18:00 (Mon-Sat, not Sunday) or 16:44-17:13 on Sat. Or a taxi is about 25€ each way. I don't think the times listed for the bus are the only departures, but are the times Mary picked to go.

Wow Kerouac!! Amazing report - I have quickly gone through looking at all the pictures and now I have to take the time to read all of your commentary! Just looking at the pictures makes me want to go there - well done!
Edit to say I'm sending an Exalt your way!

Annette, there is also a great cyclingmpath through a forest for the trip from Compiegne to Pierrefonds, I really recommend it!

And if anyone wants to see the map of cycling paths in the forest around Compiègne (including between Pierrefonds and Compiègne) here is a link: www.agglo-compiegne.fr/viepratique/iso_album/panneau_geuneural.pdfI would also recommend visiting the other town kerouac visited, called Saint-Jean-aux-Bois. There is a cycle path from Pierrefonds to Saint-Jean-aux-Bois. You can also cycle from Compiègne to the Clarière de l'Armistice, a reproduction of the train car where the official document of surrender for WWI was signed and where Hitler, in an act of humiliation, forced the French to surrender in WWII. If you go just a bit off the map in the above link you can also visit some Roman ruins, including an amphitheater. I visited all of these on my bike just a few weeks ago (except for the Clarière) and soon enough you'll find out all about them in my trip report.
