Anne mentioned in response to one of my comments that crème fraîche is not like sour cream (although in the US, I have to say, it has a tang along that line, a bit like buttermilk or whatever).
So my question is whether there is a product that is like sour cream (as we know it in the US)? For instance, my favorite cheesecake recipe has a topping that's part sour cream, and sour cream adds a lot to cakes, etc. Any ideas for what would work?

Crème Aigre is found in France, but I can't find it in Provence. It is most definitely NOT Crème Fraîche.

Yes Becky I know the sour cream topping you are speaking of for cheesecake. I simply can't get it here. Crème Fraîche, to me, would not be a good substitute in this case. In other recipes it works fine as a replacement to sour cream.
Other parts of France, particularly dairy area, Normandy, have all types of things we can't get here .... like real buttermilk. In 7 years living here, I have seen it in a supermarket twice. They never seem to keep it in stock here. Yet, in many other areas it is a regular staple on the shelf. And it is French made ! I have to use Laît Fermenté (gosh I think thats what they call it). It is a yogurt based milk, popular among the muslim population. It is an okay sub for butter milk.

It is something that you simply cannot find in supermarkets in my part of France either . Maybe in Brittany or Normandy ? Otherwise I suppose that you can find some in "cremerie" shops (shops which sell cheese and dairy products only) .

Nope, not down here. At least not the half dozen I've walked in and asked.
I have friends who live over in the Ariege. They say it is a regularly stocked item over there.
There are several French online shopping services that sell all types of things, but so far I have not found one that ships these types of perishable products. Cheeses yes, milk type products, no.
