Definitely a morning to sleep in -- went to the Champs du Mars last night!
Arrived in the city about 5 -- two families with picnics in tow. They had the Champs fenced off with tight (but very polite and reasonable) security ensuring nobody had glass bottles or alcohol (they weren't catching it all, by any means!) -- so we adjourned to the small park at Les Invalides for dinner, as we had a couple of bottles.
Back to the Champs and found a place on one of the walkways, as they'd begun to fill in by 6 pm. There was a concert put on by the anti-racism councils, so was a nice blend of folk, reggae, and soft rock -- including Gregoire and Yannick Noah (nice bonus!)
The concerts were great, and were enhanced by an absolutely gorgeous rosy sunset behind the Tower. They turned on the sparkles of the tower, and then the show began.
The musical accompaniment was Broadway hits, and it was, indeed, a hit. They were clever enough to include some of the passages from An American in Paris, along with My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Mozart: The Rock Opera, Mary Poppins, Singin' in the Rain, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, and a couple I didn't recognize.
Simply amazing.
We ended up walking all the way to Palais de Louvre to get back on the Metro, as the crowds were huge (but not nearly as massive as when we went two years ago) -- but still managed to miss our train by seconds. Tant pis -- we all piled onto the night bus, and got home just after 3 this morning, so the coffee is disappearing fast today.
It's crowded, and dusty, and a very late night...but so very worth it.
