Well last night the State senate finally passed and the Gov signed into law the bill for Marriage Equality in New York State. Now all the couples who call NY home can be wed in their own state. And others can have destination weddings in the Big Apple!
Since tomorrow is the Gay Pride Parade it shoud be quite a PARTY!
My work neighborhood (West Chelsea/Meatpacking) should still be rocking on Monday.

Yes the timing is perfect! I do wish I was in NYC this weekend. I wonder what will be the tipping point where the Fed or Supreme Court will get involved. I mean can you imagine if opposite sex marriage was legal in some states but not in other?? Or maybe my Canadian slip is showing ( as Doug often say) and I don't understand well the issues.

I think there have been a few other "big" issues where SCOTUS has initially declined to hear cases like this (some states do, most do not) but later declared the issue to have "ripened" sufficiently (enough states do) to justify an "equal protection" decision, pro or con. It may be that a successful CA court outcome repealing Prop. 8 (due by the end of 2011) or a subsequent successful CA initiative in 2012, if necessary, will tip the scales--not because of the number of states but because of the large number of people involved.
In any event, congratulations to the good folks in NY. CA may not be far behind!

A HUGE congratulations to the people of New York on this- I was so thrilled when it was announced on the news this week. We have had same sex marriage legislated for awhile in Canada and the world ddin't stop turning My husband loves to joke that he thinks everyone should be allowed to marry so he doesn't have to suffer alone ;D

I hope the rest of the country gets it's head out of the sand soon and recognizes that a marriage is made of two people.

;D How great that your authorities have recognised this, and allowed people to get on with their lives together.
We also have had same sex legal "civil partnerships" for quite a while and life goes on as normal. Society didn't exactly fall apart!
The marriage industry has benefited from it though. LOL!
But what happens if a legally married same sex couple go to a state where it is not recognised?
