I've only driven through but I know the nicest part is the old downtown around Place Plumereau. Tours is centrally located for visiting the main sites in The Loire. The tourist office website will give you lots of info if you don't have this link already: www.ligeris.com/index_en.php

We had a few hours to kill when we were in Tours waiting for a castle excursion so we walked around the old town and visited a market. Really cute place--I'd love to go back for a longer visit. The tourist office gave us a map and located several things on it for us to see--the cathedral, etc.

Well ..now I've been and really like it! Arrived on a Friday afternoon..straight from CDG..checked into Hotel Ronsard...located about mid way btw the Place Plum/old town and Cathedral and very near (a block away Rue Colbert aka "restaurant row! I had a walking tour of Tours finding hotel but once S/O arrived..okay after a spell ..we went out to explore and grab a light lunch. Walked by the Cathedral admiring outside but saving inside for later as booze and food beckoned and , unlike in most cathedral towns, there were no cafes/bistros/ souvenir shops on the Pl de Cathedral! So headed to Pl Plum and settled in under an umbrella in the middle of the Place at Au Bureau. Shared a Flammkuchen Bergerac.. lardons, goat cheese, creme fraiche, mushrooms on pizza crust with an herb.pepper infused olive oil! A couple of large Leffes and our first meal in France is perfect! As is the weather...mist has gone away...warm and sunny! Shopping on pedestrian main drag National...Monoprix for mascara(duty free @ Newark did not have makeup..wanted a Lancome..got Bour Jois @ Monoprix)wine, water, etc. Headed to Rue Colbert for diner browsing. Owner had recommended Cote Sud but it was hopping but I had read about Souris Gourmand and it had had been recommended as well so we went there. Delightful..once one gets over the mouse motif(think back to ratatouille @ the Lutecia! ) Specializes in cheese naturalment! I was thinking Tartaflette but noticed the people next to us with platters containing those little round camembert boxes..... listed as Camembert on the menu. Well..yes you get 275 grams of a round melted Camembert to put on bread, 2 medium size oval white skinned potatoes, 2 kinds of sausage(rose de Lyon and a smaller one), Paris and Country ham,and salade! A popular choice in the place and these folks, appeared to be locals, belong to the clean plate club..and they had starters!!!...I ate about half! Washed down with local St Nicolas rouge vin. Pomme sorbet avec calvados to finish! Very friendly, English speaking chef/owner came by to greet tables. He agreed the camembert plate was a lot of food! Check presented along with business card in a little wooden mouse trap! Lovely walk in moonlight past belle lit up Cathedral and back to Hotel Ronsard and the "magic door"! (given the door code and when you put it in the door pops open! no buzzer..just opens abracadabra!)

Hmmm......Not sure how I'd feel receiving a check in a mouse trap , but I must admit that it's a cute idea. In any case, not all mice are creepy, right? Mickey and Minnie are darling creatures. ;D

Having "problems" recently because of Second Avenue Subway construction, along with the "usual' city conditions.....nice mice are a hard sell!!!!!!!!!! But it was a charming restaurant! Fondues, raclettes, omelettes, pizzas, all things cheesy!

Terrie, if you want some info about what to see and do in the Loire why don't you start a new thread? That way OPF members will be aware that someone is seeking info on a new thread, instead of seeing an old one resurrected. If you need suggestions then I and others I'm sure can help you.

I was going to wait a while before asking for advice but I guess there's no time like the present. April will be here before I know it.

France is world famous for its "gastronomy", its fine restaurants and wines. It sometimes surprises visitors from outside France, that they can find top quality restaurants even in small provincial towns, and that many of these offer first-class menus at a fraction of the price one would pay for something similar in Britain or the USA.
