Hi everyone,
Well, today was the BIG day!! Denise and I started the morning off with a surprise - we got to meet the Middleton's!!!!! Totally unexpected and they seem like a lovely couple - so friendly and nice!
We got up at 6AM so we could get ready, have breakfast and then go to Hyde Park so we could get a good spot! We met Mez at one of the Underground stations and we all walked to the Park together. There was such excitement in the air and as more and more people gathered, it became even more exciting! We did hear an estimate of 125,000 people in the park but Denise thinks it was closer to 200,000! It certainly was a big crowd and as they showed pictures of other areas, we could see the masses of people gathered everywhere! There were big cheers and lots of flag waving when the royals were leaving Buckingham Palace, especially Queen Elizabeth, but everyone was waiting and waiting for the moment when the bride appeared! The look and designer of her dress had absolutely been kept a secret until the moment we saw her riding in the car with her Father and then when she emerged from the car at the church, the crowd went crazy - shouting and flag waving and everyone was so excited! I hope that a lot of you have been able to see parts of the wedding if not all of it and you know what I mean when I say that it was tremendous!
I'm so thrilled to be here for such an historic event and I'm so happy that my friend Denise could be here with me - so much more fun when one has a good friend with which to share the memories!
After the wedding, Denise and I took the Underground and went down to Westminster Abbey - we were amazed at how many people were still in the area long after the wedding was over. I think everyone was hoping to get inside the Abbey but it is closed until tomorrow. From there we walked to Big Ben and crossed the Thames - we were looking for the Waterloo Underground but it was tooaway and we were far too tired so we choose to go to the Marriott there for a cuppa tea! After a brief rest, we went back to Westminster Underground and headed back to our hotel.
I just looked at my watch and I don't believe it is almost 9:30PM - I'm going to sign off and go to bed as we have to get up early again in the morning to catch the Eurostar to Paris!
And how could I forget to mention that we had NO RAIN today!!!!! It was a little chilly this morning but the sun did peek in and out so it was actually a lovely day - we were so happy that the newlyweds could go back to Buckingham Palace in an open carriage!
Talk to you later.
Hugs,
Sandy
PS - forgot to mention another nice thing - Denise and I also got to have a slice of wedding cake - how special is that? I was talking to a young couple about the wedding and she told me that Selfridge's store was giving away free pieces of the wedding cake?? She said that they had made a large number of cakes and the ones that weren't "perfect" were kept at the store and they were giving slices away to customers after the wedding - so we went back to the store and inquired about the free slices of wedding cake - we were told by a gentleman "oh so sorry, it's all gone - it only lasted for about 1/2 hour" - I looked at him and said "do you mean you don't even have a tiny crumb left?" I must have had a pitiful look on my face as he said "just a moment -I'll check something" Voila!! He came back with the only slice they had left which was an end piece and mostly frosting, but I was so happy that he made such an effort so that we could taste the cake - delicious!
