I read an article several weeks ago about a restaurant I wanted to try the next time we go to Paris. Now I can't remember where I saw it, or what the name was.
The article described how the waiters call out when moving through the restaurant with steaming trays of escargot. It was listed as a reasonably priced place with great food.
Does this article sound familiar to anyone???

sistereurope, you have no idea! I am so obsessed with the memory of the escargot at Chez Denise that I swear I would fly to Paris just to get some and fly back home! ;D

Oh goldenmama...I had escargot for the first time in Paris in Feb with my teen ami. We both loved them so much that, once we discovered how good they are, we wouldn't go in to any restaurant that didn't have them on the menu as an appetizer. Aren't they wonderful!!??
I hope you didn't make the same mistake I did. When I got home, I tried to recreate a Paris dinner with canned escargot, among other things. They're just dreadful! We laughed until we cried, at how horrible they are. Even covered in garlic butter.

Happygoin, I haven't tried to make them at home, but I did order them several weeks ago on the Disney cruise. They were OK, but just not the same as I had in Paris. That only made me more desperate to get the real thing again! Doesn't anyone recall the description of the waiters shouting as they come by with "sizzling platters of escargot"?? Food and Wine? Traveler? Help! Some day I'll learn to write things down the minute I see something I want to remember.

I am so glad to hear you two having enjoyed the pleasure of escargot. It was love at first taste for me too, although I was about 21 at the time. I was on a first date with my first husband - and I flipped one of them across the table right into his wine glass, which I know was not a cheap bottle!! I was completely mortified. He sent his glass to the kitchen and asked for another glass! He passed away two weeks ago, and we had his funeral last Sat. My son, his only child, threw an amazing party in his honor! There was a raw bar with a kid shucking oysters for the entire day, into the evening. The trough was never emptied - with shrimp as well. Have you ever had an "oyster shot"?? Oh boy....it was quite the soiree!!

Treschic,
I am sorry to hear of the passing of your first husband. Your story about him is clearly a lovely one, and a wonderful way to remeber him. Your son has clearly honoured his Dad in a beautiful way.
Mez.

Trechic - Please convey my condolences to your son for the passing of his father. That party sounds like a wonderful way to honor his memory.

Yes, trechic, that was a great way to honor his father. You must have raised a wonderful young man. I laughed out loud at the escargot story...it made me think of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

Thanks All for your kind thoughts! Yes, it was an amazing day really. The weather could not have been more perfect - clear blue, sunny, no humidity.... Aside from my son's emotional words at the podium during the funeral - he had a champagne toast to his Dad at sundown. There was not a "peep".... and about 100 champagne flutes raised in the air - Jarrod, my son, spoke a few words and then their was this huge "CHEERS" from the crowd. I cried...

I found it! It is in Conde Nast Traveler August!
Chez Gladines, 30 Rue des Diamants in the Quartier Butte -aux-Cailles. Enrees $11-16. Copious salads $9.
I'm covering phones today at work and was just browsing!!

Good detective work Geordy! Now I can provide some more info. I went to Chez Gladines last December. I had read about it in a guidebook called Paris by Bistro and it turned out to be our friend's favorite neighborhood place (he lives in the 13th). It was mobbed, and we were the only tourists there that night. I don't remember anyone calling out while carrying plates full of escargot, but the food was really yummy (they specialize in Basque cooking) and everyone there was exceptionally nice. I got a HUGE salad and my boys ate their fill of all kinds of meaty things. It was very good and cheap - almost unbearably smoky though...that will change in a few months, so it's very worth checking out!

Yes the bit says,"Step aside when you hear Chaud! Chaud! Chaud-this will be a waiter delivering sizzling snails to hungry diners."
And now we also have your recommendation!

I loved the escargot clip! I sent it to my teen ami saying that we should have just sat back and watched the clip instead of trying to recreate our Paris feasts back home with rubbery, flavorless, canned snails. Ugh! Very fun...thanks!

Ah, Demarais, I just had the time to look at the escargot clip! I have absolutely got to get back to Paris as soon as humanly possible.
