We went on a day train trip from Paris a few years back,,,saw the cathedral, had a nice lunch, for the rest I'll have to check my journal!
But yes I recall thinking parts of the town looked like a stage set out of Coppelia or Giselle...just charming!!

Troyes is said to have a beautiful ancient town center. But the town is really famous in France for its factory stores. This used to be a region specialized in the clothes manufacturing industry (like Petit Bateau for example), and even though most of the brands now have their clothes manufactured in Asia or Africa, there are still huge malls full of magasins d'usines in the oustkirts of the town. You can spend a whole day or more shopping there .

Thanks, everyone! The beautiful, ancient town center sounds more to my liking than the shopping. I will do more research. I know I could find this but do you know which train station I would depart Paris from?
Bruce - perhaps you will get there before Sept and tell us all about it. ;D
Thanks!

Darcy, you will depart from Paris Gare de l'Est and the trip takes 1-1/2 hours in each direction. I used the voyages-sncf.com website but I believe you can also use the tgv-europe.com website as well. Using tomorrow as a departure date it gave me a cost of just over 24 euros round trip. Here is a link to the website info I used: www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train/resultats?hid=15AMYes, I wouldn't be surprised if I beat you to Troyes.

Yes..we were there March 2004...I wrote about the beautiful stained glass effect in the cathedral, lots of street construction(that should be finished! ;D ), and actually some "storing up construction " on some of the slanting, stooped, half timbered houses. From the pictures in that article they did a good job! Dej was at Grille St Jean right on a main street...as I recall it had sort of a tavern, ol fashioned feel..had a fish and veg terrine, duck confit w, potaptos dauphinois which was tres, tres bien!, champagne(but of course!, red wine and cafe! Went to a Modern Art Musee which we enjoyed...a special exhibition featuring ...yarn! But spent most of the time just exploring and in and out of small shops! The "I" Tourist Office had a good map and info in English..thought not too much spoken..it was March...they only seemed a bit perturbed when I spoke up in Anglais..."Why doesn't she be quiet and let the nice man speak in French"........I could hear them thinking! ;D
