In July I'm going to Paris with a dear friend and her daughters and daughter-in-laws for a week (can you say "tour guide" ). We'll be staying in a 2 bedroom apartment in the Marais. One of the girls has a son who will be touring Europe with a choir, and they're performing twice in Paris the week we're there, so that will be fun. Darryl is flying over to meet us toward the end of the week, will be there for FĂȘte Nationale, then we put the girls on a plane and Darryl and I stay another week+. We'll of course move into our place for that week, but we have renters coming in a few days before we want to leave, giving us the perfect opportunity to explore somewhere else in France. We've decided to take the train to Lyon. I've just started the research, but if anyone has good ideas for me, I'm all ears! I need to figure out what part of town to stay in and find a hotel of course, so any suggestions would be appreciated. What else have you seen in Lyon that's worth checking out? And of course I need restaurant recommendations!!! ;D I've always heard the food is excellent there--what are the Lyonnaise specialties?

We enjoyed our few days in Lyon. Can't recall the name of the hotel and am in London right now so can't look it up but will when we return home. It had an excellent location on Ave Foch right down from the main rail station and a few steps from Place Bellview, I think that is the name. It was equidistant from the 2 rivers and we could cross right over into Vieux LYON, GOOD TRANSPORTATION TOO, i especially liked the design museum, thought it was better than the Arts Decoritif in Paris. LOTS OF MUSEUMS IN THE CENTER OF TOWN ALL IN WALKING DISTANCE. wE DID THE SILK WEAVERS Tour thru the old pasages and saw a demo of the weaving. THE 3 HILLS ARE INTERSTING, THE HILL THAT WORKS IS THE SILK DISTRICT AND THE CHURCH AT THE TOP OF THE HILL THAT PRays is most interesting. Sorry about the caps, the shift key is different on this keyboard and I keep hitting Lock!
We made a trip to the newer section especially to see the painted buildings, Fascinating, I'll send you some pictures when we get home.
As to food, I doubt you can get a bad meal there. we went mainly to all the Bocuse bistros, Nord, Est , Sud! Lunched in various traditional cafes. and one of the best Italian delis \i have ever been in. I hope I have the name for you. I'm pretty sure I have a trip report somewhere on my home computer.

My trip there was 1995! So this is a bit dated..stayed at the Grand Hotel Concorde...backs on one of the rivers..very nice ...but as i recall anyplace in central Lyon is pretty convenient..walkable to all the spots! This was the elevator spill trip ...plus no luggage or S/o until after midnite..so first dinner was at the Italian place in the hotel...raining and raincoat..any coat..was in missing luggage. Had tuna tonnato, penne with salmon, pear tarte, kir royale and beaujolais..on second thought ..not a bad start!! Enjoyed the Musee of Decorative Arts and Fabrics. Had a wonderful, leisurely lunch at Leon de Lyon recommended highly by barman..we spent quality time together waiting for baggage and S/O! (at the bar the nite before..not the lunch! ) Loved strolling around Old Lyon..lots of theate/opera/costume oriented shops and such! Diner at Bistrod de Lyon...as I recall specialties are saucisson, lentils, leek things, quenelles, terrines, "deli" as we would say! Unfortunately the stay was cut short due to the "accident"..arrived a day late. If I go again I'd love to catch something at the Opera House..an outstanding building and venue!!

Hi Annette, You may have looked at it already, but here is the link to my TR from Lyon: www.ourparisforum.com/index.cgi?board=destinations&action=display&thread=4088We were there last Oct. LOVED it. The old town and roman ruins are wonderful...not to mention Les Halles. We stayed in a funky bed and breakfast called Bellecour sur cour...nothing super luxurious but charming and clean, and the building was really interesting. I would stay there again for sure. If you want a hotel I would still recommend that area as it was really central. The food...fabulous!! We loved the bouchons. My favorite was Bouchon de filles www.cityvox.fr/restaurants_lyon/le-bouchon-des-filles_200080544/Profil-Lieu I also really loved Chez Paul and Aux Trois Maries for quenelles, and we had a GREAT lunch at this place called Pignol. We stuck to the Bouchons so that we could sample all the traditional Lyonnaise dishes. I called it the stairmaster city so you walk off all that rich food. ;D We also went to the deportation and resistance museum. That was really moving. I'd go back to Lyon in a heartbeat. Happy planning!!!

Thanks for the ideas, Geordy & Sis ;D Yes Dawn, I did go back and read your TR last night, also enjoyed your Facebook photos again! I appreciate the restaurant names both of you, I'll make note of them. Roman ruins, Les Halles, Musee Beaux Arts--great! Darryl was in Lyon on a short business trip about 8 years ago, but he doesn't remember specifics of anything...just knows he wants to go back. We'll spend 2 nights there, then head back to Paris in time to watch the Tour de France festivities on the Champs, spend our last night in a hotel, then head home the next day.
Darryl remembers staying very near the main central square in Lyon--I assume that was Place Bellecour. Sis, your B&B is right there. Is this the area you're talking about Jody? I don't see an Ave. Foch near there, but there is one across the river a ways.
These few days are going to be fun to put together! Thanks again for the ideas.

YES aNNETTE, THE HOTE IS VERY NEAR, STEPS ACTUALLY FROM pLACE bELLECOur, I hate european keyboards The cap lock is where the shift should be and I don't look at what I'm typing! It is a modern hotel , convenient but without charm. Ave Foch runs from the train station to the place.

We have stayed twice at what was a Sofitel and is now an Accor. Fabulous breakfasts and well located. I will need to pull my folder and the names of our favorite restaurants. I happen to adore quenelles. The Museum of the Resistance is well worth seeing and of course the silk museum and the few silk shops where the items are actually from silk made in LYON! Be careful as some of the places sell pretty and cheap scarves but not from silk from Lyon.

All this talk about Lyon has renewed my interest to go there - it's been on my list of places I'd like to visit in France but I just don't seem to tear myself away from Paris!
