In a very warped stroke of good fortune, we learned this weekend that our apartment is listed in the most recent print edition of Fodor's guide to Paris. Wish it could have happened at a more opportune time.

Still congratulations are in order, Doug, even if it didn't happen at the most opportune time. I know once you are finished with the repairs that the apartment will be even more beautiful.
Congratulations! Laura

That is very bittersweet.
What's happening with your apt, Doug?

That is great! ....well, sort of! I've been sending good thoughts your way and hope progress is being made on the reconstruction project.

Reconstruction has not yet started. The syndic hasn't even held a meeting since last July, despite repeated threats from all the residents for lawsuits and all other sorts of nastiness. Motocycles continue to park on the sidewalks despite multilple letters sent to the maire and the commissariat. We think there may be a meeting in February, but it's still uncertain. Once construction starts, it will likely take 9 months to a year.

Well, let see the Fodor's listing as a light at the end of a long tunnel!

Doug, that's got to be so incredibly frustrating for you guys! I'm learning, as you have said in the past, that the syndics can be, well...."interesting" to work with. Ours is on it's way out. We voted on new works in December, and once that's completed we have 60-70% of the owners in favor of hiring a new company. There are enough new people in the building who aren't deeply rooted to the current syndic to enable a change.
I like Luc's suggestion that this Fodor's listing is a light at the end of the tunnel! I see you're on your way to Paris soon (and other points!)--hope it's a great trip and that you can shake some sense into the powers that be to get things started!

Jody, a syndic is the management company the copropriété (homeowners association) hires to take care of the building. They manage all building repairs, maintenance and upgrades, and as I'm finding out, are employed at the will of a majority of the building owners. Mess up, and they're shopping for someone new!

Sounds like poor Doug and the other owners need to go shopping!

Yeah, but it might be hard with the building in it's current condition. Maybe they're stuck with who they have until the work is completed? Either way, I hope things start to move along really soon Doug can start seeing real progress and not have to keep waiting.

Well, the immediate feedback from the reviewer is glowing! Let's keep our fingers crossed that the listing makes it through the editorial process!
