I always put myself on my xmas buying list, "un petit cadeaux pour moi". I had a 50% coupon at Borders the day before Turkey Day and couldn't resist this book. WOW, WOW, WOW. This was selected as the editor's pick for best of 2010 and I can see why. There are over 300 recipes, simple, elegant, easy french food. Each recipe is a step by step and preceded by descriptions of either where the recipe came from, french custom, what's in called in French and how it's pronounced or Dorie's take on it. Not only are the photos gorgeous but its the sidebars that have serving, storing suggestions and some have "bonne idee". Then there are explanations of how or why she does things a certain way, for example she takes the germ out of garlic cloves or peeling of celery, how to tone down onions. Most of the recipes have simple ingredients along with fresh herbs and spices. This cookbook is for all cooks, experienced or newbies. This would make a great holiday gift for the cooks on your list. It's available now on Amazon for $24 regular $40. Off to start the first recipe of Gougeres (cheese puffs), and 299 to go.

I have GOT to get this book! I love Dorie anyway, and now, after that lovely review, I will make sure to get myself an early Christmas present ;D Thanks Butterfly!! PS. I always have taken the germ out of garlic cloves. It's actually the germ that makes many people dislike the after-effects of garlic. PSS. Dorie came out with a disclaimer on one of the recipes in her book: doriegreenspan.com/2010/08/well-according-to-amazon-around.html

Thanks for the heads up, Happy. I was looking thru the preview on Amazon the other day, and the Speculoos recipe is what cinched the purchase for me! I got hooked on Speculoos gelato at Amorino last month (and the Amorina ain't bad, either! ) Can't wait for my copy of the book to arrive.
