This is a little food report from my recent trip. It's especially for Goldenmama who is about to go to Paris as the only vegetarian in her family.
On my first trip to Paris about 6 years ago, I was eating seafood in places with no veggie offerings. Now I am strictly vegetarian leaning towards vegan. (I know, No Cheese - sacrebleu! But is this any worse than the members of this forum who eschew wine? I think not!)
Anyway, I was a bit nervous about how to combine my eating habits with that of my husband who is vegetarian/seafood. So I decided to avoid the tempeh and tofu places recommended on other sites and looked for places that were traditional yet veggie friendly. Here are some of the places we found:
1. MACEO (http://www.maceorestaurant.com) - a fine dining restaurant that has an inventive vegetarian tasting menu along with meat and fish offerings.
2. FISH LA BOISSONNERIE 69, rue du Seine - we had the best time here (And it's open Sunday nights). They are what I'd call 'veggie-friendly' - they made me a delicious pasta dish. We sat at the bar and chatted with ex-pats and natives who love the place. Be sure to make a reservation.
3. CHEZ ENZO - this came with lots of recommendations. It's a small place with not much in the way of ambiance, but the food was suprisingly good. I had a pasta dish with truffle cream sauce (here's were the only partial vegan comes in!) which was yummy.
We stopped for lunches at cafes along our way. I ordered salads which the French do so well - filled with warm potates and other vegetables. Of course, there's always frites (my passion) Husband opted for cheese plates and a glass of wine. He was a happy camper for the rest of the day. So you should have no problems eating with the others.
We went to L'AS in the Marais for falafel. DO NOT miss it! My falafel eating has been ruined forever (or until I can get back to Paris!) Note that it is closed all day Saturday until 6PM. Open on Sundays.
And of course, nothing would be complete without a treat from Berthillion (a very veggie-friendly place!) Mango sorbet was my fav.
My best suggestion is to relax and don't worry about the food. All places have menus outside, so you can check. And it never hurts to ask what they can make for you. My experience everywhere I travel is that these are the times I end up with the best food.
I'm sure others on this forum have more ideas for you. I also recommend visiting the France board of www.chowhound.com.
Hope this helps a bit Goldenmama. Bon appetit and have a wonderful time!
