Can someone help with comparisons on these two - I know they both have great views, but food? service?

I've found some comments on chowhound, but no one has mentioned the dress code - can anyone help me out? Also for George's at the Pompidou? Thanks!

I read lots of postings on these two...in the end we decided on Cafe L'Homme as it had a menu better suited to a 16 year old. They could not have been nicer, they noted the special birthday we were celebrating and put us at a table smack in front of the Tower. The food was pretty good, basic staples - melon and country ham appetizers, fish and veal plats, and good desserts. The added bonus was that we dined there the night of the World Cup final and took in a great scene! The staff did a fab job at keeping the spectators low on the wall in front as to not obscure our lovely view!

I have read/heard, the view is spectacular at both and the food at both at best mediocre. I would suggest having a drink somewhere with an amazing view and spend your money on the numerous places to have fantastic food without the view.

:)Well I had lunch at Les Ombres and drinks on the terrace at Cafe Homme. and I couln't fault the service at either place. I didn't eat at Cafe Homme so I cannot comment on that. Here is my trip report. ourparisforum.com/index.cgi?board=reports&action=display&thread=3582As you can see from the photos, at Lunchtime people were wearing anything from smart casual jeans to formal office type wear. At cafe L'Homme, because it was evening people were more dressed up. We were in smart casual, trousers and tops, nothing fancy. I suppose it depends on your benchmark. I will admit I am not a gourmet and as long as the food tastes good to me I am not fussy. I really enjoyed the food at Les Hombres. My personal opinion is that the view outside is better at Cafe L'Homme at you are looking out over the Trocadero towards the Eiffel tower. We went one evening in March and they were quiet, so they were happy to let us sit out on the terrace in the dark and see the Eiffel tower twinkle. Inside the restaurant I felt it was a bit gloomy and uninspiring. At Les Hombres the Eiffel tower is towering over you and you can see it through the glass roof. I was rather disappointed in that but I thought the restaurant itself was more pleasant and had a more lively atmosphere. The staff were relaxed and happy and not stuffy or formal so the whole "feel" of the restaurant was more upbeat and energetic. Hope this helps Denise Love from England

I can't compare the two because I've only been to Les Ombres but I was not at all impressed with the food and dinner was 300? euros (don't remember exactly but it was around there) for the two of us. The service was fair but the view and ambiance were spectacular. We had the corner table with nothing in front of us but the view of the Eiffel Tower. It was a really special night, even though I wouldn't go back a second time.

I have eaten. Les Ombres does indeed have a great view but the click-clacking of heels of the wait-folk on the fancy flooring is a distraction and not from the food which is at best mediocre.

We went to Cafe L'Homme after a lovely champagne tasting cruise with O Chateau last Saturday night so now I can make a comparison. We had a bizarre experience there. We had no reservations so we couldn't expect to get a good table. The table we were given wasn't bad, but the really strange thing was that they kept seating people at the table at the beginning of our row, then coming out and asking them to move because the table was "reserved". It was really rude. We were seated next to a cute younger couple. Jerry ordered a martini. they brought us something.....we didn't know what, so I tasted it and it was a margarita. The couple next to us told us it was theirs....we sent it back, they brought us another drink and it was a gin martini instead of the vodka one Jerry had ordered. He just drank it instead of having to wait again. The couple next to us got another margarita. This time it had a hair floating in it and they sent it back, never to have one returned....but we noticed later when they left after not being too happy with their experience that the margarita had never been taken off their bill. We got our food, it wasn't anything special but not too bad either then the most bizarre part of the evening was that when we asked for the check, the waiter (cute young guy) brought over the check and told us right out that the tip WAS NOT included in the check and would I like to add it into the credit card payment???!!!! So......I said to him, every other place in France has the tip included but here at this restaurant it isn't, is that what you're telling me? He went into a whole song and dance about how it was but it as so small that no one would really work for so little money. Then he asked again if I wanted to add the tip in. Of course, that didn't happen. Don't think we'll be going back there anytime soon.

Thanks for sharing your tales of these two places, Terrie. It's too bad about the unpleasant experience at Cafe L'Homme--I would have expected better. Both these restos have been on my list, but I don't think we'll be rushing to either.

Annette, Shoesy - Sorry to read that Terrie had such an unpleasant experience, but as I noted in my post in July, I had quite a nice time there. Granted, as others have noted, the food is in no way the best you will have in Paris, but I have had worse, also. I had no problems at all with the staff and found them accommodating and capable. So I wouldn't take it right off my list. Rather as Denise suggests, try them for drinks and if they meet with your approval, then you might consider dining there. Just my two cents...

...Don't think we'll be going back there anytime soon. Oh I think the comedy alone was worth some of the price of admission ;D
