For the Parisian tourist, who is not a "foodie" and cannot imagine taking three hours for dining, but would still like a special meal during his/her trip, I would suggest a breakfast at the famous Café de la Paix on Place de l'Opéra. Open in 1862 and renovated in 2003 during 18 months of works at the cost of 125 millions Euros, the Second Empire decor, the painted ceilings, the golden columms bring you back in time. The view of the Palais Garnier is imprenable. The Café open for breakfast at 7 am for a petit déjeuner: continental (15 € à 24 €), buffet (31 €). We order the buffet with a bottle of champagne and call it our special day!

That sounds like a good idea. Is the buffet served later that 7 A.M. ? It would be fun to have it as a brunch around 11. I will need to fast for months given all the places I want to eat at while in Paris and France. But Merci Luc.

It start at 7am but I remember entering the café at around 9:30ish and still the buffet was nicely spread. We had to wait ten minutes for a table, so we were "forced" to drink mimosas while waiting. Quelle horreur!

I'm surprised you could get mimosas there. They are, by the way, my absolute favorite cocktail--one that I can drink by the gallonful on a lazy weekend morning, noon, afternoon, into the evening....

Luc, Café de la Paix is one of my most special memories from my trip as a 15-year old with my father. We sat outside in the terrace and I had Coke in a tall glass with icecubes and lemonslices pinned to a long coctailstick (which to me was wildly exotic and luxurious) - it was 1973, so we were not accustomed to such things. (I had never even seen the small portionsized marmelades that we got on the hotel for breakfast before ! I stole as many as I could lay my hands on to bring back home !) OK, back to Café de la Paix - I went to the bathroom and almost fainted when I saw the goldplated taps and all that shining marble and the tiles with FLOWERS !!! And what really knocked me out was that there was this stack of thick white cotton cloths which you could take to wipe/dry your hands after washing, and THEN you only had to throw them in a basket, as if they were to be disposed of !. My jaw was hanging down in awe at such extravagance. I still have the postcard I wrote back to my mother about it and it is filled with exclamation marks: !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes I think that I should go back to pay hommage to my first delightful trip and to my beloved father, who died 6 years ago. He would love to know that I am now a Paris regular - and that I even take my mother down there too. So brunch at Café de la Paix - yes, maybe. Or maybe just a Coke.
