The little one turned ten last week and I took the girls to lunch to celebrate. We headed to Josephine, chez Dumonet because 1) It is close by and we'd not yet tried it, 2) the menu is gastronoique but the place itself is somewhat relaxed, 3) They have half portions for many of their dishes.
It was simply EXCELLENT. One of the better meals I've had in Paris. The meal started with an amuse bouche of gaspacho. I ordered stuffed morel mushrooms as an entree and it was divine. The girls had their house pate and cleaned their plates. For plat we had boeuf bourguignon, confit de canard and sea bass. It was all excellent, the bourguigon particularly noteworthy, with a lovely smokey tang and lots of mushrooms. Finally for dessert, a Grand Marnier souffle that has haunted me ever since, a memorable creme brulee and a mille feulle that is prepared individually for each guest (must be ordered with the meal so the kitchen has time to prepare the creme anglaise).
EVERYTHING was perfect. Even the butter stands out in our minds and the service was astonishing... the chef made 1/4 portion of the mille feuille for my daughter because a whole one would have been too much AND they did not charge us for it, as it was her b-day.
The afternoon ended with coffee for Mom and a tray of cookies/chocolates for the girls. Yum!

mmmmmmmmmmmmm............... I am licking the screen from reading your description ! As you know I normally do not roam the streets of the 6th all that much, but this is absolutely a fine reason to give it a try ! These are the coordinates of the bistrot (in this forum we do NOT ask about the obvious, right ?)

Will certainly keep this in mind for lunch when we are walking in the 6th. Love duck confit and the deserts all sounded splendid. I could go directly to desert. It is frequently the part of the menu I read first and then work backwards. Is this a place where lunch reservations are necessary or can one drop in and if the latter, what times are best? Thanks Phread. Sounds like you have socialized the children well as far as food patterns. I congratulate you!

Hi Holger, We had reservations, but there would have been no problems had we walked in.
As for the girls and their socialization.... I can only take partial responsibility, the French school system has helped! I take them somewhere a bit more demanding each year. This lunch was 2.5 hours, which is long for them, so we're still a few years from the big time.

I'll be in Paris in June and my list of restaurants to try has exceeded my meal times! This one sounds very enticing...Thanks for the report.

I love this story, no matter how many times I read it. It sound like such a glorius day. It seems a little romantic to me because I can see them all dressed up in their best clothes. Tell me more. I have one grown son and I don't think that I could have payed him cash for that ""treat". Susan

I know that you enjoyed your lunch here Gitte, and Phread had a positive experience as well. Your "giong to Paris in December" forum friends are thinking of adding it to our increasingly (and painstakingly!) narrowed down must-do resto list for our trip in December...any one else been there? So far, we have decided on Le Reminet and Le P'tit Troquet...unless we change our minds...

We have a reservation for dinner there in September and I will post a review when we return of all our restaurants.
